Monster Colas / Why do you guys love them?

Here is something I have been wondering for a while: What is the obsession with monster colas all about?! Sure it looks good, but it appears to me that smaller buds develop nicer and are overall of a better quality since they get more light penetration.
Am I off on this? What do you guys think?

I think it's just the 'does size matter' question, no definitive answer will be had here Im afraid. Personally i like to fim so never get the huge single colas just 5 medium beauties and an array of smaller ones!

na man, the top main colas get most of the light and tend to be more dense than the smaller popcorn buds. plus if you think about having a large single cola, there is more weight in stems.. which some people like to have a lil extra weight hehe..

also just the appeal of having a nug that you can play baseball with just has some kind of magical attraction.

Its just a power thing. The bigger the better right? It contributes to the success of your grow but a good number of us know its not the size but how you use it. LOL

There is no denying the attraction of a huge shiney cola. I like to nip off the treminal leaves during veg and this seems to make several major bud sites per plant. Not the mongo single but several very nice medium size colas.

Hear, hear, I get it, but :bigjoint: are they qualitative better or do their smaller siblings pack a overall nicer appeal i.e. look, taste etc. once the big monster is broken up?

the single top cola will be the most dense, stinky, and sticky. . if youve ever broken up a big cola before. . you know what i mean. . its crystalized like a motha fu. . the lower buds are nice too dont get me wronge. . but the buds on top rein supreme. .

Ok, Ok, I agree. The buds on top reign hands down! But what about a scrog where you sacrifice the monster cola but gain a shitload of equal height buds with maximum light exposure?!

I'm going to vote against monster colas, in my experience they are more apt to have fungal contaminations inside the cola that you cant even see until it's ruined a good chunk of herb.

if you take care of your environmental conditions mold and fungus wont be a problem... i remember back in the day when i first started gettin goods, picked up an oz and this dude just handed me a HUGE donkey dick and i was like are you kidding me!! i thought it was one huge nug until i started breakin it up and realized it was a bunch of small nugs.. then found the 4g of stem running down the middle LOL... still i was big pimpin slappin hoes with that nug!!

For retailers, in the end its about total weight of harvest. If I got 3 and a half oz of a plant that had a skinny center cola I doubt I would give a shit really. Its obviously nothing you'd wanna send to Hightimes Grower of the Century section, but the end result is weight.

The flip side is if you managed to get a center cola that dry weighed in at 3/4 of an oz, that would be something to show off about, but if the total yield of said plant was 1 and a half oz, well, you see where Im getting to...youre either intentionally growing big main colas like the Lowryder people do, or youre doing something wrong.
