Molded Cannabis

Hey Guys,

Not sure what's going on but I have at least 2 pounds of personal grown weed that has MOLDED! They are in multiple 1 litre mason jars with Boveda 62% humidity packs in each jar and I read before that if the cannabis has been properly dried and burped after a few weeks, the Boveda packs should take care of the rest and won't need to open the jars so often.

My drying/curing details:
1. After harvest, I would hang dry for about a week in my dark room with a light breeze from the fan.
2. I would test out the branches to see if they snap, if so, I would start to cut the buds off the stem.
3. I would fill the Mason jars up to about 75% of cannabis.
4. I would burp them about 30 mins a day, twice a day for the first 2 weeks
5. Slow down the burping to Once every 2 days for a week
6. Put in the Boveda 62% humidity packs and then store the jars in a dark cabinet.
7. Open the jars once every month.

Can anyone tell me if:
1. The Boveda 62% Humidity packs really work? I'm a little skeptical now since I've never had weed mold on me like this.
2. Am I not drying/curing correctly?

The buds feel good when I smoke them, even my friends say it's strong and very good smelling but just after a about 2 months of not burping them, I found my weed smelling like really bad, weird tangy smell, definitely not real cannabis smell and white mold growing from within (see pics).

Let me know what you guys think or advise and thanks in advance.

With bovedas, i know it says that its ready to use as it is but i think its a misleading instruction. I get the best results when i dry them a bit ‘till i feel little bumps forming inside before use. This way you increase the moisture holding capacity of those packs ime.

There is a limit to how much moisture the packs can pull. If the packs are near saturation and you put them in with moist bud they aren't gonna do the job.

Do not smoke any of that. For every little bit of mold you see there’s millions more spores waiting to bloom. Next time dry the bud more. Jar it properly with opening etc. Then when it’s done completely drop in a Boveda.

I have a big jar of colour changing drying crystals called Drierite. Blue when dry and turn pink when saturated. Put them in the oven for a while to use them over and over again.

They sell various sized packs like Bovidas but don't have the 62% thing going on.

Yeah ... boveda or integra packs do not magically cure on their own. They are merely for storage use “ after “ a proper drying. Your mold is from still undried bud .

Packs only push and pull moisture to stabilize it .... nothing else. Unfortunately since mold has begun to thrive it pretty much wrecked everything within jar and should be tossed.

It’s always better to run the hygrometer solo in container ( alone ) to make sure you are within range of Rh before adding a boveda ... plus if you do not plan to store your product for at least a few months ... meaning if you grow and consume your harvest within a few weeks of jarring then it’s a waste of time and money. These packs are for LONG TERM storage of herb.

I have never had to deal with this problem luckily. I often dry a pound of two in a huge container so thank fuck i havent had issues.

Anyway @vostok may have a solution to your moldy buds.

That's why I don't bother with all that burping jars everyday. I dry my weed slowly until it's ready to smoke and then jar it up. No boveda packs, hygrometers, etc...

Unfortunately that weed should be tossed at this point.

Yeah, I dry the shit out of it for like 9 days. It happened to me a long time ago. The problem is you HAVE to recheck it in like 8 hours to see if there is any moisture buildup in the bud. Never again dammit! Never again.

All this special bullshit to cure your bud only helps if you live in very dry or wet climates. If you have central heat and air conditioning you don't need any of that crap.

If you have to burp your jars to let moisture out, your weed wasnt dry enough.

Here in Hawaii the RH is almost always above 65%...usually much higher, burping jars is counterproductive and just lets more moisture in.
Also, I dont use boveda's havent found them to be very effective and they seem to reduce terps in my experience.

The Boveda is to provide moisture and not to remove it. Wrong tool for the task. Dessicated siliga gel packs absorb moisture.
I thought they were designed to help establish a humidity equilibrium with the bud and could "give or "take" ?

Yes, the hydrometer read 60% with the Boveda packs in.
What i meant to say is, before you put the boveda,s in , did you run the hydrometers on their own for a few days to get an idea of the level of humidity, this makes total sense to me but I must confess I’ve had 2 cookies tonight,,,so far

Yes they are and i have used them to complete the drying process and finish curing. Not ideal but i had to leave town. The thing is buds were almost dry when i used boveda to finish drying and the bovedas were almost dry too. So the moisture absorbing capacity of the packs were sufficient. But out of the box they don’t act as a dessicant. Not a very powerful one anyway.
