Mixing Strains When Grinding - Synergy vs Purestrains?

Howdy - I'm a youngling when it comes to growing, only having 3 full grows underneath my belt. At the moment, I only grow for myself plus 3 other patients that are close friends and relatives.

About two months ago, I finished up a very nice grow where I had both Full Moon and Aurora Indica (Nirvana). Both myself and my patients thought the quality of both strains were very good, and each have their different uses.

The last couple of weeks I've ground (dedicated coffee grinder) a mixture that utilizes 2\3 FM and 1\3 AI. For general use, I was extremely pleased with this mixture, and it's become the preferred blend for my patients as well.

I still find that I like the "pure strains" for a specific utility, but this grind is becoming our default for general use. My questions for those with more experience then I are:

1: This blend seems like it results in a very good synergy between the two strains that results in a better overall general medication. Have others experienced this same type of effect?

2: I realize that the master seedbanks are designing strains that combine these same types of effects that I have experienced with my "blend". Do you think that these hybrid strains result in the same type of synergy that a ground-blend provides? (Added Nirvana Ice to my next grow, for experimenting on a hybrid).

Thanks for any feedback, I'm really interested in the opinions of experts out there.

Not an expert, but I've been smokin since I was 14, and growin for 2 yrs. I'd say yes there is a synergy. When I smoke Indica it helps slow down my thoughts and put them into more organized words, when I smoke Sativa it's just getting high and thinking more, not necessarily in a context for others to pick up on. But mixing them has definitely been good, and is called a "salad". I have also picked up a couple hybrids from dispensaries. I wouldn't say it's the same synergy, it's more it's own high. I have talked to some people though, that get too high from both and can't handle it. So don't mix two too strong strains together.

Hey,thanks alot for the feedback, Fins. Will be doing alot of experimenting with both this "salad" idea and comparing to the candidates. 'ppreciate it.

well every strain has differnt mixtures of cannabinoids so thats what the differnt high comes from. think about like if you mix the stoney weed with a more sativa heady weed than you could end up with a very interesting high...

I wouldn't call myself an expert but i came up with this idea in our local scene aswell and yes, if you get the right blend then i believe you can get the stone your after a lot easier than growing a hybrid. One of my favourite salad bases is lsd because it has a unique stone to it that doesn't really blow you away with any of the effects you would get from other strains but adds it's own little surprises to the mix. Third lsd tho two thirds k2 is my favourite mix. This particular k2 is pure sati and toughened over 15 years, an amazing plant if you can ever pick it up, was discussing with it's caretaker the other night how newbies can be easily tricked into thinking the one plant is three strains, it really does produce visibly different highs, mids and low's, all smoke differently too. Back on topic- be careful when making your salad, you can and will get it wrong and go for a bad ride but from experience, don't make one salad of two potentials, have a bad trip and give up on the recipe, tweak it, more of one less of the other. Best salad i ever made was equal parts lsd, k2, pineapple chunk and jack herrer. Took a brave pill to sink that bowl and the resulting ride lasted all day, visuals, distorted hearing, mad munchies, heaps of energy and no pain all day. I've been trying to recreate it ever since but even with the same strains cloned and grown identically it doesn't always work the same so if you find a mix you like-stock up! But enjoy your newfound level of smoking enjoyment, i've been doing it since i got my hands on more than one strain and i'll never turn back. Take note of each strains effects, make a notebook on it and try combine two with opposing effects, Equal in strength alone and split it 70/30 leaning towards your favourite

Oh i have a 'death jar' that i keep a killer nug out of every batch i grow or buy in, once it gets full i grind it up and go for a ride, that's my favourite jar and i have to say once you throw more than 4 different strains in the mix you pretty much cant get it wrong

I like your idea of experimentation. I've spent most of my career in R&D, and optmizing formulations is very similar. Kind of like cooking too. Love it.

I don't see the point of mixing strains in a grinder. Maybe I'm too old school, but I vape a certain strain for a specific purpose. Leaving the mixing to the strain breeders. I alternate my indoor grows with new strains all the time. I grow two different strains each grow cycle, then two different ones the next cycle then back to the original two strains and so forth. I keep enough of all four strains on hand to switch up whenever the mood strikes. Two of my strains are pure Indicas and two are Indica dominant hybrids, one is 80-20% the other is 60-40%.

The only time there may be a slight bit of mixing might occur when the grinder has less that a vape whip fill in it and I add a bud of a different strain into the grinder. the mix would be negligible.

When I have multiple strains of smoke available to me I sometimes mix them in the joint when I want a particular combination of effects, especially for the last joint in the late evening when getting sleepy isn't a problem. I will often mix a little stony indica smoke in with very heady sativas as I don't really enjoy the pure sativa effect - I find I get overly paranoid when I smoke pure sativas by themselves with little or no stony element there.

If one strain is getting me sufficiently stoned on a given day though I don't like to mix them too much, and I never blend in large quantities as I don't want to develop a tollerance to my strains through a mix. Changing up the strains I smoke from day to day helps to prevent tollerance somewhat. If I only had two strains available and I smoked both every day in a mix then after a few days neither strain (or the mix) would have the same impact for me. I find that smoking mainly one strain each day (with maybe a little mixing or switching last thing at night if I want to get sleepy) helps to keep tollerance at bay for longer.

I find the strain plays a large part in tolerance build up, some strains won't last a week of daily smoking but i've found 5 or 6 that have no buildup, these i use as my base and add the weaker strains to for effect. I definately mix for medical reasons, i need heavy pain relief constantly but the heavy indicas can knock me down too much to function properly, throw a bit of heady sativa and i'm fine with the pain relief the sati might not provide. As well as if the cbd makes me feel ill some sati lsd in the mix fixes that
