Just got ten 1.5 cu.ft bags of miracle grow organic choice potting soil and thinking about getting a package deal ($42.95) for all three nutes on greners.com. Anyone have any thoughts on this?? Oh yea, also getting 10 smart pots (10lbs) on that site too. The strain that I'm growing is sensitive to nitrogen any recommendations on how I should approach this?? I know a lot of people hate Miracle Grow anything but I don't have much of a selection where I live and I couldnt afford to ship quality org. soil here that would cost a fortune im sure. Anyone have any experience with any of this?? Thanks for any replies. Peace&Love.

Hattrick, The problem with most Miracle Gro products is that they contain time released nutrients. I get the feeling that Miracle Gro is the reason you think you have "nitrogen sensitive" plants. Miracle Gro products are mainly designed with the set it and forget it type of front lawn "gardener" hence the need for slow release nutes in their products.

I personally use Roots Organics potting soil by Aurora Innovations. The product is made in Oregon but I pick it up on the east coast for $18-22 per 1.5cu. I think its like $10-15 a bag if you live in closer proximity to the manufacturer. You should look into mixing up a batch of Subcool's Super Soil if you have the time to let it rest (30-40days). You should have no problem finding a recipe on RIU probably with photos and detailed instructions.

I can't speak for the Fox Farm nutes but from what I have heard you need to be careful distinguishing between truly organic and partially organic when it comes to Fox Farm nutes. I have used the Bio Bizz line and I know many growers swear by it but it's expensive and I can personally vouch for the quality of Sub's super soil mix over the Bio Bizz line as far as growing in soil goes. Just remember that as soon as you start adding inorganic chemical compounds to the soil you kill off all mycorrhizae and beneficial nematode colonies in the root system. If your soil isn't alive you aren't growing true organic cannabis. Any money you spend up front will come back to you if you invest in going organic the right way.

Also,

Is this for an Indoor or Outdoor set up? I assumed Indoor. If its Outdoor then you can forget about the Smart Pots in KY. You do not want to be walking back to your spot with water everyday for those airbags.

I'm growing doc greenthumbs Iranian Auto outdoor. I havent even started them yet, but they are known for there sensitivity to nit. I have seen a lot of people run smart pots outdoors with great results. I can't remember where I seen it but they ran two clones from same mother. one in smart pot and one in reg pot and i think it was after three or four weeks, but anyways the smart pot was over twice the size as the one in reg pot. How often do you think I would have to water in smart pot outdoor. I know it prob would be every two days. I'm already looking into an automatic watering system that can water 10 to 20 plants has anyone ever used one? They're pretty expensive but it would be worth it i'd say. a long term investment I could use it every year. It would be worth being able to use smart pots i think. It runs off a 9 volt battery. you can set it to water for 10, 20, 30, or 40 days depending on how much output of water you want i think. Sounds to good to be true huh?

As far as the automatic watering system with smart pots goes you have to think about it this way.

1) Why would you be using cheap soil (Miracle Gro) with smart pots and an expensive auto watering system. I grow in #10 nursery pots (7gal) with amended soil. I water every 3 to 5 days depending on the weather. You really shouldn't reuse pots outside. I'm sure people will disagree but unless you are anal about cleaning them its just a road to a headache. I just don't think an auto-watering system that runs on a 9v (sketchy) is the best investment you could make to grow a few girls. Invest in good organic soil and nutrients.

2) If these are going to be near your home you can shelf the auto watering system and by all means use smart pots as long as you are going to be around all summer. Good planning equals good results. You might be free this time of year but come June are you going to be as attentive? If you leave and your plants dry out they might not die but the yield and quality will suffer SIGNIFICANTLY. If you have the time to water then by all means go for the added oxygenating capabilities of the Smart Pots. A final word of warning: Because the smart pots allow the soil to dry out more frequently you need to water more frequently. Watering leech's nutrients out of soil so keep that in mind and keep an eye on your ladies. You may need to fertilize sooner or later depending on the seasonal variables where you live.

3) A lot of growers I know use Roots Organic nutrients. I believe it is a 3 part system. Roots Organics in general offer a good bang for your buck (I use the soil not the nutes though). I think the liter containers are like $12-20 ($40-60/gal) a piece depending on where you get it. Always start low with any fertilizer. Use 1/4 of what the manufacturer recommends and go up from their depending on results. Over fertilized leaves generally start to look waaay too dark and waxy.

You probably could get away with picking up a bottle of the Roots Bloom or any bloom fertilizer for that matter as the fertilizers in the Miracle Grow will take a while to get used up. You most likely will not need any veg stage fertilizer.

Like I said. I have a walmart, tractor supply and lowes. I already checked with all the greenhouses and no one has an organic potting mix aside from Wally world. I paid 65 for ten bags of mg org choice soil and 78 for the oasis watering system you should check it out it has really good reviews. I hope it works out. Plus has a 2 year warranty so can't lose too much. Well maybe a little in shipping if it fucks up. Btw. I too think smart pots are a smart choice. If I have to buy a watering system so be it from what I've seen so far it can double the reward in some cases. So what kind nute should I use???? Hey get on Greners.com and see what nutes they have cause that's what site ima order my smart pots from. Peace&love.

Earth juice has some of the best Organic Ferts on the market and Miracle Grow Organic Potting Soil does Not have time released ferts in it (IT'S:idea: ORGANIC). I'm using it on my Red Diesel and I like that I can control every little bit of ferts that goes into my ladies and not worry about nute burn.

Fox Farms is NOT organic. If you must use store bought liquid nutrients check out Age Old Organics. Age Old Grow, bloom, kelp and unsulphured black strap molasses is all you need. There are also much better soil choices available. I highly recommend Roots Organics 707. You wont need any grow fertilizer for at least 3 weeks.
