Here is my papaya grown under a 400w mh from start to finish. It is a regular mh and not a dual spectrum type. Seems fine to me.

that papaya looks so dense with trichs . thats what ive heard they may not be the biggest buds but they will definatly be the strongest they can be! if you grow that any bigger the trichs would be more spread out so it would be fatter but weaker ya know??? i think im going for the gusto with the mh!

Why don't yall try flowering with MH for first two weeks then HPS for four weeks then back to MH for the last weeks that way they get nice resin boost at start then size boost and then an extra resin boost at the end

old post, i know, but theres absolutely NOTHING wrong with flowering under MH lamps. i have to concur with the posts stating that flowering under MH produces tighter, more potent buds..
we did our own little experiment a couple of years ago on this exact subject. we grew 12 kush plants, all 12 under MH for veg, and switched 6 over to HPS for flowering. all of the plants were in the exact same, pots, same amounts of water and nutes,ect, only difference is during flowering we switched 6 over to their own room under HPS. both sets produced very similar amounts ( i might add also, that all of these plants were clones of of the same mother) of flowers. they were flowered and harvested at the same time.
in the end, the plants flowered under HPS were airy and lighter that the nice solid nuggets from the MH flowered plants. in total mass, the HPS flowered buds looked to be quite a bit MORE bud in actual volume than the MH plants, BUT when weighed out, the MH flowered buds actually weighed MORE plant for plant. they also were MUCH more potent.
point being this. its a 6 one, half dozen the other type thing, with two seperate schools of thought on the subject. i do still use HPS in some instances, but overall, i dont worry to much if i dont change things out before flowering. i know one grower who flowers with MH up until about the last two weeks, and then switches to HPS. benefits?.......havent a clue.
one thing i find sort of comical. marijuanas been being grown for thousands of years without any issues. granted, there are things we do today to increase the potency , but overall, alot of these guys spend way to much money on the "i read somewere..." or the "hey, this long time grower told me" bullshit. ive been growing probably longer than most of you have been alive, and back in the da we grew weed just as good as most of the stuff out there today, and we could grow a whole crop on about 50 bucks.
its just an herb guys, just like sage, parsley oregano,ect. its not rocket science to grow it

That is good, Here is my situation I have 4, 250 watt hps and am not seeing the results i want out of them, I also have a 1000 watt Mh that im not using, I was thinking about taking down two of the 250 watt hps lights and putting in the 1000 watt Mh in there place. Would i get a better yield or am i better off just staying with the 250's

once again.. i've said it plenty of times before.
the rule of thumb... is to use HPS for flowering and MH for veg.
Using MH lights for flowering.. can and usually does cause airy yields.
But, what do I know. Just trying to help someone from making a terrible mistake.

anyhow.. like I said.. and like Wink said... its best to use a mixed spectrum.. rather than just MH for flowering. You really need both spectrums.. and if not.. then you should just stick with the HPS.
I have a grow in progress and as a total noob I want to add a voice to the debate. Unfortunately, I don't have pics to back this up but it is NO lie:
I was growing 24/0 in veg while I was growing 2 autoflowering g13 poison dwarfs. They finished about 3 weeks ago and I switched my remaining strains (warlock, satori, and a genie of the lamp) over to 12/12.
I have a 1000w aircooled MH with a brand new Horitlux M1000B/BU/HTL bulb. Using a 220CFM inline fan, so I can touch the glass and it's never more than luke warm. Keeping that in mind, tried to keep my plants level by stacking books under pots and what not so that the tops have been within a few inches of the hood throughout their lives. I use some CFLS to hit the parts of the plant that are not in the goldilocks zone.
Vegetative growth was amazing for the photoperiod plants, not so much for the dwarfs.
The dwarfs matured on schedule, were a bit stretchy, but produced TIGHT resin covered buds. I'm skeptical of the potency of ruderalis strains anyways, but I was surprised here. Very nice smoke. Still, it had an after taste that reminded me of lawn clippings. Ruderalis will not enter my tent again. In terms of the effect of the light on budding, this stuff looks like primo bud to me.
Now lets talk about the photoperiod plants.
These plants are flowering like motherfuckers. I'm using supernatural nutes, kellog soil, and keep the ph and ppm at the recommended levels. I'm a new grower so I'm going the K.I.S.S route and i'll be damned if it doesn't work (which I guess is the point.)
Here's an interesting side note though. I fim'd the satori and it has 8 tops, way too big to fit it all under the light with the other two so I picked up a couple of 65w 2700k cfls from Lowers and have been keeping them as close as I can to one side of the plant. These lights put off about 4000 lumens each. Unless I'm mistaken that is below optimal in terms of lumens per foot, but maybe there is a synergy between the lumens of the MH and the CFLS because that side of the plant IS growing denser and the buds seem to be a slightly different color. Kind of a weird experiment that proves that you need the reds to get a little more volume?
I guess no matter how you slice it, you can't convince me that you can't flower with MH. It seems to be going quite well for me.

How did that go docartz? still feel Mh is no worse than hps? I gonna side by side comparison 1k mh and 1k hps with interest in weight, stone and cosmetics. I will post up my results. I have been adding more and more mh to my flowers each grow and I have been liking the outcome. I have started my past few 12/12 cycles with m.h and I always note the teeny buds seem denser than what a hps would produce in those first couple weeks. I never have the balls to let 'em go all the way with the mh's-- but now I have two identical 1k closets so ..... I'm gonna put this to rest (at least in my own head)( prolly chicken out again 3 weeks down the line).
Oh yeah.. 6 skywalker and 6 fire per room; Lst'd, scrog'd, topp'd, partial vert, and anything else you can think of (as long as its organic). I literally just made this decision- today is day 1 of flower (by the photoperiod).

I was talking to someone at HTGS yesterday and asking about 600-watt MH bulbs. He said until a short time ago there were no true 600-watt MH bulbs bulbs and all were conversion bulbs, but now true 600-watt MH bulbs are being manufactured. I did not ask any name brands but a call to HTGS should get you answers if you need any.
This is a great thread. I am. Aboutt to put my ladies into fllower today with my 400w mh. I couldlnt get my hands on a cmh bulb like I wanted in time so I want to buy a new bulb today. What is the best bulb for flowering with mh? They have ones that have more red spectrum compared to the reg blue scpetrum bulbs right?

just my 2 cents here i found this form. I have done about 3 flowerings now first 2 I did all HPS and on my last one I did 2 1k HPS and i had a 1k MH in there as well. This was my best grow by far and I think the MH had alot to do with it. One thing I did notice is that the buds look smaller under them MH. I tested the whole run I left 3 under at all times all though they look thinner and maybe a bit smaller once I took them out of the MH light they were the same size and just as dense as the others. I think it has alot to do with the color you can actualy see them better under the MH . Just my input, seems like everyone has the best way to each there own I guess
