I was always interested in metal detecting.
I bought one a few years back but really never put it to use.
I have some beaches where I live so hopefully I'll start using it one day.
Where have you or your friends found treasure?

You know, I thought about doing this a couple of years ago. I thought it would be a neat hobby. I read on some of the forums that local city governments (USA) were restricting where you could detect. Any of you run into restrictions?

Metal detecting is tough. Most places here are either off limits or have been hit hard already. Add to that the lack of any metal using cultures in the USA prior to the 1500's. Beach combing is about all thats left.

We did some metal detecting as a family a while back. Started in the field and found little of interest, so moved into the garden and bingo. Started finding enough to an trinkets that we got in a JCB and some archeologists and lo and behold, a month later wE had excavated the remains of a Roman villa. Got enough artifacts to set up an exhibition.

In the UK, it seems that you want anything but to strike gold. Then the government pops up and attempt to take every last ounce off you claiming its a treasure trove of her majesty or some bull crap. I forget the official argument.

not going to lie... love seeing the guys on the beach combing the surf line, digging digging then disgruntled and moving on. i remember as a kid throwing quarters and nickles out in front of a dude he thought he was having an epic day until he realized what was going on and shot us a smile

Ha, suddenly made me think of that instance in the UK, folk went down to the beach and went home with brand new, albeit rather wet superbikes. Some corporate types got pretty pissed. I personally maintain that if you're going to orang your boat then deal with the consequences.

Those things really work!!
I took one to a garage full of Mantovani, Wayne Newton and the King Family ... and five minutes, man, five minutes.

Depends upon which country, but generally most of Europe if that narrows it down at all :-)
