MedicalMike's guide to BHO #1

This extraction uses butane/propane which is explosive, please be careful if you try to do it. I accept no responsibility for anyone who attempts my methods and gets hurt or damages property. Just sharing them

I understand some people on here don't like me and that's that. This is a place to help each other out in my eyes.
I have been making my own BHO daily for pretty much exactly a year now and it always meets my picky standards.
This is my most frequently used method because it is easy and simple

Things to know:
  • You get what you put in
  • Chlorophyll "loves" moisture
  • The colder the better
  • N-butane only (I love N-Blend but I feel weird putting it in the freezer)
  • No powdered weed ( A lot of people use coffee grinders, you want to mince it by hand. No herb grinders either

(Now someone may not agree with these statements but i can assure you they are fact and tested)

What you need:
  • Purge Vacuum Chamber/Oven (as long as you have a full vac and keep things warm you are good)
  • Hotplate/Stove (While a hotplate is more portable keep in mind, they do spark frequently)
  • Freezer
  • Damp-Rid and resealable container (Optional)
  • Cannabis (Flower)
  • N-butane or N-Blend (I prefer SToK or Capital. Puretane is also an option. N-Blend is a product of capital contains 18% N-Propane)
  • Extraction Tube
  • 12" Pyrex dish and a pan that it fits in
  • A Slick Pad or Parchment paper (For purging)
  • Oven mit or glove ( the tube and can get super cold)
How To:

Preparation:

Step 1 - Let your flower dry in open air for a while. (Overnight is ideal but can be done in a couple hours)

Step 2 -
It is at this point where i prefer to gently pull apart my nugs into a minced like consistency. (Being aggressive and grinding/shredding it will to nothing but add chlorophyll to your end result)

Step 3 -
Place your "Minced" flower in a sealable container, with a small dish or cup filled with Damp-Rid or similar product. This turns to liquid as it absorbs moisture so the smaller dish/cup is required to stop the liquid and your flower from coming in contact. Now let this do its thing overnight

Step 4 - Quickly pack your tube in a dry area to avoid remoisturizing the flower. Wrap it up in saran wrap or something similar to keep moisture out and put it in the freezer.

Step 5 - Put your packed tube and can of N-butane in the freezer. I like to do this for as long as it takes a solo cup of water to freeze solid or overnight. (Lets say 6 hours)

(You are done preparing your product, now comes the fun part)

Extraction:

Step 6 - Preheat purge vac to about 100 degrees F and Heat your pyrex dish in a water bath on the stove. (I'm not going to provide an exact temp as that is debatable, (I like to heat it to the point where I can keep my knuckle on the dish for 5-10 seconds before i get that burning feeling) People seem to do this like 100-150 degrees F. I think 100 is a bit too low to blast on but people do it.

Step 7 - Take your tube and can of N-butane OUTSIDE along with your pyrex dish and hot water. (Keep this pan and dish together you need that water to provide a constant source of heat outside, the cold butane will cool down your dish)

Step 8 - Insert your appropriate sized n-butane cans tip into the hole in your tube. apply pressure for 5-10 seconds to realease the butane and than shake the tube violently over your pyrex dish. Repeat this step until the butane comes out clear or you are satisfied with what you've collected. Now, let things evaporate to a bubbly goo before going back inside

Step 9 - If you blasted onto parchment paper than place that in your preheated purge vacuum if not than gentle scrap with a sterile razor and wipe onto your preferred purging material in a thin even layer

Purge:

Step 10 - Close your preheated vacuum and turn on your pump. I like to run mine 5-10 minutes after my gauge displays -30 Hg (Just to be sure, I also thing it may help pull out those initial gases released but this isn't proven)

Step 11 - Keep things sealed for the first 12-24 hrs and maintain that 100 degrees consistently

Step 12 - Now you can open it up and flip your BHO if you would like. I don't think flipping is necessary for runs that are only like a gram.

Step 13 - I like to repull a vac every couple hours during the last day, i usually do a 72 hour purge

You should be golden!;):leaf: Enjoy!bongsmilie

It is very important you get things as dry and cold as possible for gold, tasty results

I took time out of my day to type this up for other people. Don't bash my method until you've tried it. Don't be rude to me either, if you have a suggestion i would love to hear it, in a respectful way. Feel free to share your method

This is not my only method, i can upload another if people appreciate this.

Why do you prefer n-butane?
I noticed you mentioned it throughout
I prefer N-butane because it is much more pure, it is stored in weld free, poly lined cans (poly won't leach into your butane) it doesn't have any extra propellants either. It's just clean pure normal butane ready to use.
They no what you are doing with their nbutane, companies like power are for filling lighters/torches

The reason I choose healthier is because I get "air trapping" in my lungs. Which means I can inhale more air then I can push out. I didn't have this problem before I started making dabs on the stove with Power 5. I never went to a doctor to get the two linked but I would rather be safe than sorry.
I won't smoke or buy anything made out of that "lighter fluid" it's dirty

Curious if anyone ever adopted this method as there own? If so do you still use it? Have you changed anything? This is still my most common method.

N-butane stands for normal butane aka straight chain butane (C4H10) it has nothing to do with purity it is just the structure of the molecule. ISO-butane is the same with the exception that it is branched aka an isomer of butane.

A reasonable approach to open blasting, that should produce a suitable product.

I prefer n-Butane to Isobutane because it appears to produce better flavor. We extract it to -30C add 30 to 50% n-Propane to extract at -50C. If you're using canned lighter fuel, it most likely has Propane and/or Isobutane in it as well

No Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval for canned butane in the freezer, because sometimes they leak as the seals get colder and less resilient. A few pictures of freezer explosions floating about. Maybe a ice and brine bath, or dry ice instead.

For those using a closed loop system, here is what we just posted on our new The Alchemist Resource site.
