Mechanic thread....

Good advice for a DIY project. I am not a DIY auto mechanic.
Simple? ok. Laborious and time consuming? Look for a Qualified mechanic.

It had been running hotter than normal over the past month but not close to that day.

After telling me the radiator needed to be replaced, the garage wanted to sell me a tune up, more $$$ sales, said the check engine code was from cylinder 2.

No to the tuneup. They called back later and said the thermostat needed replaced as it was still heating up. ok.

They called the next day to say they had left a test under pressure and when they returned in the morning cylinder 2 was gushing water.

The conversation broke down after that.
He would not give an answer as to what it may cost to fix. I don't know alot about cars but enough
to know when head gaskets are in play cost goes up quick.

I am now left with the feeling that the mechanic was treating symptoms and not troubleshooting the problem, costing me more $$$
for each symptom he attempted to fix. Likely knowing that the truth would be too expensive to tell, thus baiting for me for the next $$$.

Having talked to a few other garages the locals want 6K+ to fix it.
For 3K maybe, but they want more than I could sell it for if I have it fixed.

Looks like I'll be looking for another ride soon.

[There is no .gif worthy to post here]

yeah the idiot was gafing you around man...that sucks...leak down test would have found it, even just changing the oil....for that matter just pull number 2 spark plug....if water comes out...boom...

diy pricing...would prolly cost u 1k..with your labor and parts....js....hate to loose a ride like that...

Coolant should only be up to about 16 PSI though.
Now wait just a fucking minute! You are an aircraft mechanic you can't know anything about cars!

My hub tried desperately to sell me on that bullshit early in our marriage. Suffice to say it went either you get out there and troubleshoot it or I will. I don't particularly know or care why it worked but he scuttled out of the house like his ass had been lit on fire.

NAPA has another seal removal tool, so I was thinking I would just have it shipped to the house if it was cheaper than the round trip to pick it up. They wanted $21 to ship it about 15 miles, screw that. I guess it gives me an excuse to go pick up KFC when I get it. I'll take a mic to check the size against the one I have that is too small also.

I worked electronics, the only wrench turning was mounting the black boxes and removing panels. I didn't have the money to pay someone to work on cars, or whatever else broke so I learned. I also maintained/rebuilt my classic Triumph motorcycles. My Triple has 3 sets of points, fun fun. Lucas electronics, the prince of darkness.

i'll take an all dark if your coming this way....

After thinking about it it handles the pressure during operation, so I guess it should hold up.

Should have no problem holding the pressure. I've had nearly 300k on one and sold it still running good. If the body isn't rusty, and straight it will last a long time. Depending on time it takes to send a head out and wait for it.....maybe a long block would benefit. Plus you still have to pull the exhaust and intake off to just replace the head. Not much more to do to pull the block and everything is new. An oil passage could be blocked and the reason why #2 overheated. But those heads warp and it's not really common but they definitely do.

If it was me.....it depends on the rest of the body. When I say I love jeeps.....I've only had 3 wranglers but many Cherokees......some decent tires they will go anywhere and with enough room.

And if you don't want it there are plenty of people that do.

Hub was a crew chief. He also had obviously forgotten about bragging to me about his frame up Mustang rebuild. The engine he put in his first car he got from the junkyard and a few other wrenching experiences. I could understand slagging off but I could not understand the lie. That's when I ignited.
