Been a few since I blew head gaskets. Gave the turbos up to save my perfect license.1997 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 L 6-cylinder 4x4. 112000 original miles.

You need a head gasket, head bolts, anti seize, a torque wrench, proper tools, any other gaskets or seating seals that need to be removed. Then coolant flush and fill as now contaminated. Don't want to replace thermostat or water pump down the road.Throw a belt in the mix and $350-$400 max at home after a 2 day slow fix. $900 and up at the fly by night shops here.

Did it get hot? If that's the case then your head is probably warped and will need to be skimmed at the very least

Hot. Yes. The meter pegged at 55 mph,
Engine started ticking then shut off. I was able to coast to the side of the road. Never saw steam from it.
No. I don't have the facilities, tools, experience or patience to take this on.
My auto mechanic skills do not extend far past a dipstick or the gass cap.

How did you do that at 112k? There probably is something else going on for that to happen. When that motor overheats the first thing that happens is the exhaust manifold cracks at the Y

Don't know. Did not look in to it.
I did drive it away from the garage.
Temps stayed normal and some smoke came from the exhaust during a short 3 mile drive home. It now sits in my driveway.

Well get out there and see lol if it's a fairly clean Cherokee it's got value. They aren't going cheep anymore so worth fixing.

popped a head gasket huh....or from what your describing anyways. Prolly just needs a top end done.....need to ck for water in the crank case though....best right off...is to do an oil change and pull the filter.....you looking for milkness of the oil....almost yellowish....after that cut the filter open to see if any particles are in the filter looking for metal shavings. Has it been getting hot on you lately? 112K miles...that actually not bad...js

I'd replace that head while in there anyway. Keep that 4.0 pristine. Jeep straight 6, ls1, 2jz are my top 3 motors of all time

Good advice for a DIY project. I am not a DIY auto mechanic.
Simple? ok. Laborious and time consuming? Look for a Qualified mechanic.
It had been running hotter than normal over the past month but not close to that day.
After telling me the radiator needed to be replaced, the garage wanted to sell me a tune up, more $$$ sales, said the check engine code was from cylinder 2.
No to the tuneup. They called back later and said the thermostat needed replaced as it was still heating up. ok.
They called the next day to say they had left a test under pressure and when they returned in the morning cylinder 2 was gushing water.
The conversation broke down after that.
He would not give an answer as to what it may cost to fix. I don't know alot about cars but enough
to know when head gaskets are in play cost goes up quick.
I am now left with the feeling that the mechanic was treating symptoms and not troubleshooting the problem, costing me more $$$
for each symptom he attempted to fix. Likely knowing that the truth would be too expensive to tell, thus baiting for me for the next $$$.
Having talked to a few other garages the locals want 6K+ to fix it.
For 3K maybe, but they want more than I could sell it for if I have it fixed.
Looks like I'll be looking for another ride soon.
