Maximising Yield

Background information:

  • We are currently using a 3 x 3.5m room with panda walls and floors.
  • 5 x 600w hps lights - all with horizonal light configurations, two with chinamen shades and 3 with 'batman' shades
  • tap water with normal tds 350
  • nutrients starting at 850 in grow out to 1400ppm in bloom
  • pH kept at 6.0 during entire cycle, using a chemical tester to monitor
  • canna coco medium
  • drip clean
  • canna nutrients in grow, dutch master bloom
  • potash in bloom
  • shooting powder in the final 3 weeks
  • last 2 days rain water
  • 18/6 light cycle during grow, 12/12 bloom
  • feed cycles - 3 x 1 minute feeds, 3 x 2 minute feeds
  • 200l resevoir
  • 50l brain
  • run to waste system
  • 350m extraction outlet
  • 200m inlet
  • 350x300 carbon filter
This time around we had 6 plants, 4 weeks in grow, 9 weeks in bloom. we bend our plants over horizontal once they reach 20cm and use netting to assist with weight distribution. We also tipped them 2/3 times.

The outcome: 2-3 lbs yield

Next time around we're planning on reducing our plants to 4 and placing two 400w lights on the ground which would mean we would have a total of 3800watts.

For those resident growers, what other advice can you give us to maximise our yield? The girl at our hydro shop said she was getting 9lbs off of 4 plants.

You should be able to get 7-8 lbs from that set-up without even using advanced growing techniques.

If you're running 5 x 600W HPS you should already know how to maximize your yield, otherwise your just wasting money on wasted power.

However enough of me being a dick :P ... If you've got access to that kind of equipment I'd suggest setting up a perpetual harvest system so you can harvest every 2 weeks or so, won't be pounds, but a few ounces every 2 weeks is nothing to complain about.

P.S - Do you know how long that girl at the hydro store veges for? Coz for example, one or two big grows per year may yield less over all than 4 or 5 small grows per year (you can do more small grows coz they take less time to veg etc etc)

But yea, I'd definitely look into the perpetual grow thing if I were you.

In Answer to your questions, I know she has a veg cycle of 4 weeks, and 8 weeks in Bloom.

Im not overly sure on how much light she is using but we go on the gram/watt ratio as a guide. This ratio will change however as we use Roots Exelurator and extra chemicals to enhance the grow and bloom of our plants.

In the same room previously I have acheived the same weight as my current crop, however that was off 4 plants! and it was a pretty dodgy set up. I dont know why we havent got more out of this one?

One theory I have is she bent the plants over at the stem, they were about 3 -4 weeks old at the time and I think this may have crimped the stalks which prohibited the uptake of nutrients to the effected parts of the plant and in turn decreased the yeild.?

Im 99% certain I have everything else sorted properly..

heres some pics of the room.

CO2 will increase yields 20-40%. Rent a 40 LB tank from a nearby welding gasses supply (praxair is the one I use). Rent on the tank costs me $7/month. 40 lb tank lasts for 2 grows.

Yeah Id considered this, I do spend a fuck load of money there...however she came to our house and helped us out with our room so I dont think shed tell lies to get us to buy from them.

We would go there anyway as the shop is the best one in the state and its close to us.

Im thinking that it was a combination of things that attributed to this low yield, our globes were 4 rooms old, our plants were very bushy and obscured light from the middles, we didnt take off any of the shade leaves during flower,....etal.

Sounds like BS to me, and I would never ever ever let some chick from the hydro shop come to my house to set up grow gear, no matter how hot she may be.

Unless shes quite stupid and weighed it wet (which wouldnt surprise me) then she would be vegging for 6-9 months and growing 4 foot trees with several massive tops just to get a few pounds.

Errm my whole thread is about why I didnt get as much as I should have from ym room, if I got buds as big as my head I wouldnt be complaining.

I let her come round becuase I have been shopping there for ages and we have earnt each others trust, we never mentioned growing buds for ages, we have a different kind of "growing society" here in and you can sometimes find people who you know you can trust. I wouldnt have let her come over if I didnt trust her.

Check out my pics at the start of the thread, there about 5 weeks in bloom and the size of my arm! but thats about all they did!

Gees theres alot of peeps here who know jack shit about growing. Just because you cannot achieve more than a few ounces per plant doesnt mean that people with far more knowedge and ability than you cant achieve more. You can absolutley get 3 lbs off of one plant if you know what you are doing. But because you cant get that when you use CFL's, you dont think the real growers cant. But getting back to the original question, you seem to be doing most things right. You will make some mistakes in your first few grows which will reduce your yield, but thats why experience is "gained" and not "given". Here is what I would say you need to concentrate on.Firstly, make sure you Veg long enough. You might need to veg for 6-10 weeks to get the plants to the right size to push those types of yields. Make sure you dont skimp on pot sizes as well. Also use the new Liquid Light and Penetrator spray from Dutch Master in the Veg and early Flower. I would also use Overdrive by AN in the last 3 weeks of flower prior to flushing. Also flush with either Mollassis or Liquid Carbo Load by AN. Also, cut off the bigger riper buds first and allow the less ripe ones to continue putting on weight untill they are maxed. Also try to put some 400W HPS under the plants to help lower bud growth. So when everything is done right your yield will depend mostly on your light. Rule of thumb, 1 x 600W HPS = 1 Lb, 1 x 1000W HPS = 2 Lbs.Oh, and your method is very Australian.......
