The thing about white COBs, there's no UV at all. My belief is that the addition of UV-A is beneficial for potency while having very little detrimental effect on yield, as UV-B does. The Black Dog site has a page about it. They found UV-A was enough to enhance potency. The good news is that blacklight CFLs are cheap, unlike reptile lights, and you don't need much, maybe 10% of main lighting wattage.

I'm sure UV LEDs would be better. I just used CFL because I could get them in a store on the spot. It did seem to increase potency but it's just subjective, no tests. Here's a paper about UV plant effects. I think THC would be similar to a phenolic in the article.

I think I actually found some beefy 230nm leds a while back that actually push some decent wattage and that is an ionizing spectrum, so it is dangerous to spend time under. Bunch of those on for maybe two hours a day, I'll find a product page for them.

Yeah man, that was a REALLY good episode man, encyclopedic knowledge. We love ya bruhbruh. Killin it pimp.

I added lower efficiency cobs to bump my temperature up! Works like a charm mang, those Citizen CLU044 are really good for it, 2 chips bumped my temps from 72 to 77 in a 4*8 tent, 20 chips total at 1.4 amps. I have the least efficient dice in the CLU044 line, and it puts out a decent amount of heat, but the CLU044 offers some pretty decent efficiency in lower phosphor chips.

I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like some of the most knowledgeable individuals in cannabis right now are posting in this very thread. A lot of growers haven't demystified their trade yet, even commercial grows. Look at these giant warehouse LPs using pre-mix nutrients, just absorbing that cost, and then 200kw of HPS and massive header units for cooling, what a fucking joke.

Honestly, coming from huge success personally using COBs, I feel exactly the same way about those LPs that are successful using ridiculous means as I do seeing a Lamborghini Aventadore parallel parked in Manhattan. Like, nice job there, for a successful guy, you make some dangerously stupid decisions. I think that's a catastrophic failure, if your facility is that inefficient. Knowing that a guy like me could grow better quality product using a quarter of that wattage. It's a failure to see past instant gratification, and that is a failure on the part of one's intelligence. Prices are going to plummet, they'll be sitting on top of a black sand beach panning for gold while we've got the vain tapped. The future of indoor and light-dep growing is a handful of people across RIU and youtube right now, that's pretty crazy. They thought rosin was bad for the oil community.

Do uncovered royal blue leds (cobs with the yellow filter peeled off) give off uv-a as they do give a sort of blacklight effect.

@p4id greengene talked about removing phosphor on one of our tech talks. Ill try to find out what he said, the just of it is: the cob would probably be destroyed in the process, but man it would be nice to get a super efficient source of blue light.

The 2,3 or 4 step Macadam ellipse represents the quality of the color as it relates to human perception. It's apparently not something that affects plants and should be disregarded.
Kind of but not really,

"contains all colors which are indistinguishable, to the average human eye, from the color at the center of the ellipse"

hence why it is called the macadam ellipse...

Basically it is a statistical problem...for example not every diode labeled 3000k is exactly 3k, it might be i.e. 3087k....@ steps are just guaranteeing a closer form to 3000k within 25 kelvin degrees or so and 4 steps are allowed 100 degrees of Kelvin tolerance?

What actually is cool, is that because there is differences in EVERY diode, it may lead to more of a full spectrum on accident with multiple diodes...filling in certain nm areas of def...."should be disregarded?....... probably, but it still would be fun to fuck around with to see what the effects could be.....:peace:

@Growmau5 Hi dude, when you did the video about building different configs I must of watched that video ten times before I finally made a decision on what to build.
So I went and bought everything I need to build a sixteen light array, so im super excited to finish it.

On The Dude Grows Show you mentioned about every color in the light spectrum is absorbed and used by plants at varying levels, this made me realise how important a full spectrum really is.
Especially when they directly influence terpenes, the smell and the taste but how they also determine the kind of high we get and the different benefits they bring, physically and mentally.

So for example this is not accurate just an example:

Blue absorption 70%
Red absorption 88%
Orange absorption 10%
Violet absorption 6%
Cyan absorption 32%
Yellow absorption 37%
Green absorption 12%

IR absorption 6% Final size of plants and maturation age ?
UVB absorption 3% What could be related to THCA, CBD ect final strength ?

Time to start thinking about my next upgrade with the IR and UVB but I wonder what else in the light spectrum we are missing to make the full potential of our beloved plants :D
Maybe there is some other benefits outside in nature and beyond, even planetary influences we could use in a man made contraption to fully realise a plant's full potential and give us even deeper control and understanding of plant biology.

You have some of the best quality editing on you tube @Growmau5 . It's a pain in the ass for me to put up a decent video. With having the time to do so.. I know how much work goes into just editing alone. So awesome work. Thanks for all the videos. They're great reference guides for builds.

Dude it's really crazy, I showed my best friend (and neighbor who happens to be a burnout hippy electrical engineering savant with 2 really fat degrees) a blown out cxb3070 so he took it apart with this little manipulator under a lab scope and pulled off some of the individual elements. We re-flowed them onto a tiny little pcb that we etched with some ferric chloride and fired them, they were actually insanely bright. He also has a snap-on with about a million various leds in it, and he busts out the TINY OH MY GOD SMALL single superbrite leds that are used for pick-and-place applications with precision tools, I think there are a couple in the Xbox 1 controller if you want to see the actual size of the individual elements. It's smaller than a dandelion fluff by a good margin. You could theoretically make your own cob right now if you just order them individually, etch a pcb onto a heat sink, re-flow the elements that you pick-and-place, and add your own phosphor cladding... I mean it would be very tedious but you could do it. I might do that, just for a laugh, it'll be a dope future-primitive artifact if nothing else. I wonder where you can source bulk phosphor without looking like a terrorist...

I agree. Wish there was a good HO UV led out there we could all use. At least cutter has the far red part dialed in for us.

I came across a pic of the Spectrum King when ordering some nutes and thought it looked cool. Then on google, I found a grow thread where people mentioned home built “COB lights”. I thought “WTF is a cob light. Drivers? They run on software?" So, A bit more googling and I found this thread and Growmou5s videos.

I’d also like to thank everyone that posed questions and answers, and especially to littlejacob, bonjour, who posted a link to HSs available in Europe, also to the member, sorry I can’t remember who it was that, that reminded me about self tapping screws!!

I built a 3 COB veg light, liked it, and have just finished hanging 2 of 4, 8 cob lights, each with 2 * 1.4a mean well dimmable drivers. Each light has a 50ohm pot.

So, my question is this, is the best way to tell what amperage the lights are running at, is to measure the voltage running across the positive and negative dimming lead? Ie, would 7.5v = 1.05 amp and 5v = .7amps?

I just worked out that my build required at least 288 holes, probably more.:roll:

At least I didn't have to tap any! I used M3 6mm BTW.(:
Ya those 'll work too. I wouldn't go any shorter though. Remember, drill a 7/64" hole, then go in with a screwdriver, til theres pressure, then back off an 1/8-1/4 turn & continue to repeat til you're all the way down. Then when you're ready to mount stuff, use a NEW screw.

right now I'm building a 400w CXB3590 fixture and I'm trying to figure out what 5w diodes to buy to add 10w of deep red, 10w of deep blue, 10w of regular red, 10w of regular blue, and 10w of usb(if i can find the diodes)

I'm hoping this will boost my super dank to ultra super dank
