Massive pheno variation when ordering seeds

Take the best out of the four plants. You don't need a full on large scale pheno hunt to find something worth keeping. If none are keepers, try again the next round.
That is definitely an option, just not the best use of my plant count right now. I would plant 4 seeds of the same kind, take cuts of all 4 before flowering and keep whatever does best if any. Downside to that is only having one kind of flower at that point. I prefer to have a variety of medicine.

Im thinking one other option is revegging. For now i can keep growing a variety of strains and if i come across something that i absolutely must keep, ill reveg it. Once i build up my supply of flower and rosin to get me through a year or so, ill be in a better place to do some small scale pheno hunting to find my core strain. Then i can just always have at least one plant of that going with 3 open slots for other strains. What would really be nice is to team up with a few other guys locally to build up a variety of good genetics. Each guy keep a mother of a different strain.

Only being able to grow 4 flowering plants is rough. A community is almost necessary in that situation. I usually grow 24, and a good portion of the time I'm also vegging another 24. The 24 veg plants come from at least double that amount of clones. So there are times when I'm pushing up 70+ plants.

Yeah rough for sure. They just cut the count in half. Im in montana where they just went legal recreationally this year. First bill was 4 mature plants and 4 seedlings per adult with up to 2 adults growing their limit at one residence, now they have cut that in half to 2 and 2. So between my wife and i we were able to have 8 flowering, 8 seedling but now only half that. All that said i really wonder if they are even going after it at all. At this point i don't even know what would be grounds for a search. Its legal to grow so having your house wreak like weed or any other dead give aways of a grow is obviously not reason to search.

They would have to watch your waste product and try to convince a judge you were above count by dead stalks or something. Lol. I’m sure they’ll find a way, they always find a way.

I just chuck my plant waste into the woods. It's nice not using rockwool or liquid nutrients anymore. I barely have anything that goes into the actual garbage aside from old fabric pots and butane cans.

Although last year a tweaked out biker tried to outrun a cop and wiped out in front of my house. His girlfriend ran through my backyard to escape, so like 15 cops were walking around my property with flashlights trying to find her for about 30 minutes. I had just haphazardly thrown a bunch of leaves into a briar patch and I was praying that they didn't discover the bodies. I was also lucky because my plants were still in veg and didn't stink at the time. I overheard the cop ask the dude, "when was the last time you smoked meth?" and he said "about a month ago." Then the cop said, "well that's odd because we arrested you last week for possession." That's probably the only time a cop has made me laugh. The guy was all sweaty and sketched out. I felt bad for him, but at the same time his bad decisions almost exposed my bold decisions.

And welcome to Detroit. ( I know you don’t live here but) lmao

It depends where you get the seeds from and if they actually breed instead of just chucking pollen like the majority of these clowns selling overpriced seeds are doing these days. All the people waiting on some "Drop" from some overrated pollen chucker selling packs of 10 seeds for $250 makes me shake my head.

If you plant 4 seeds you shouldn't get 4 different pheno's. But people will keep going back for more. I have strains that are stable with 85% of the seeds producing plants that are the same. These seeds also didn't cost me anything except the original stock from a legitimate breeder that I used as a start for projects I've been working on for years.

Many of these pollen chuckers are just crossing strains and making seeds as fast as they can to sell to gullible cannabis growers that buy into the hype.

I wouldn't touch anything on instagram, strainly, or anything social media. I also wouldn't order clones through the mail. It might be legal to grow where you're at but it's still illegal under federal law and sending and receiving cannabis clones through the mail is a felony and can carry prison time of up to 5 years. Chances are you won't get caught but there is no damn clone worth risking going to jail over as far as I'm concerned.

Reputable breeders only. Maybe I'm just lucky but, 90% of my purchased seeds ran pretty stable. What I've found though, is that even good breeders will have issues from time to time but usually they pull them. Freebies are often a different story. Maybe they use some lesser stabilized strains, AKA hermie potential, as freebies? I no longer use freebies as a deciding factor in seed buys. My experience with freebies = 50-60% unstable. I will still run them but, I'll kill 'em in a blink if they show any problems.
That being said, I'll never put an end to the Hunt...

It definitely takes work to figure who has more stable genetics but it is worth it.

The main issue is consumers are misled into believing there are say 1000 different strains that can all do completely different amazing things....

They try something, like it, and many unaware their brains get used to anything. They constantly look for new and different because they arent trained to really figure what is good or what they even really like.

This leads the seed sellers to want a constantly updating and new stock...which doesnt and cant exist. So they sell a new cross and a new "cut only" bred into their new strains, constantly pumping the hype train to get consumers to think they always want new and better and that it's out there.

It's like asking how many people have tried the "real" gg4...lol most dont even know...or care.

There are some stable genetics and if you dont want to play the lottery it's the only way. Clone or seed they are out there and both are still a PITA to deal with lol.

That's the way it is when you're growing from seed! First couple of times, I grew clones from the dispensary... they all grew alike. I grew 3 Blueberry Skunk from seed and they were all different. #1 grew tall and lanky with airy buds / with a skunky aroma. #2 had awesome structure, dense buds and smelled only faintly of blueberry- no skunk smell at all. #3 was the best combo of her sisters. She had awesome, dense nugs that were pure dank!

I'm growing 4 Wedding Cakes from ILGM currently. I have 1 monster that takes up half of my tent. Lots of buds on it, only they are airy ass hell. Another looks really good as far as bud density and structure. Tall, stout, full of golf ball sized nugs. Third and fourth ones are being drowned out by the bigger pair because they are shorter. The smaller ones have smaller buds, but they are dense and stanky!. All of the same strain, similar but different.

So it sounds like there is a huge amount of unstable genetics out there being sold, but if you find a good source you can get somewhat consistent results from seeds. So how do i find these good sources? Do i need to just keep trying random seed companies and grow their seeds until i find something good? Or is there known reputable places to get seeds?
Lets say i want gg4, is there somewhere i can get it thats known to be reputable? Should i contact a breeder directly? Which breeder?

Give an idea what part of the world you are in and what strains or cuts you want.

Back in the day when i grew 10 years ago, i got cuttings from a caregiver i knew. Always knew exactly what the bud was gonna be and i kept my strains for years with 100% consistency.
Recently started growing again just for personal and my experience so far with ordering seeds has not been great. Just harvested some bruce banner #3 and ak47 fast flower, 2 plants of each. The plants are not similar to eachother at all, especially the bruce banner. One plant had super thin sativa like leaves, more stretchy, low yeild of quite frosty bud with pungent smell. Other plant was very vigorous, gigantic fat leaves, huge buds with much less resin production, not much smell. Basically no similarity at all that would suggest they are the same strain. Same deal with the 2 ak47 plants, not quite as different but still the 2 plants dont look like same strain.
Is this just how it goes when growing from seed? Or should i be questioning the reliability of the seed company? I expect pheno variation but i always thought it was small differences. I dont have the time, space, or allowable plant count to pheno hunt. Should i just try again with a different seed company, or is this normal?
Some strains will be really stable and all alike... many you will still have to go through selection and cutting processes to get the best of the bunch
