How about early, uneducated, simple men reacting to things they can not explain.
Now that we know things that happen in nature are not "God's wrath. When will we make the next jump?
Problem with that is the things that can be attributed to the bible that science can not explain away.

Why do the Idiot Savant twins that can give you a date and day for any day in history, all the way back to day 1. Have to account for a 24hr skip by citing Ezekiel where god stopped time for 24hrs? This is in all three major religions! Islam, Judaism and Christianity - Baha'i too!
NASA when calculating the "space window" to launch for the moon.... They were always 24hrs off as they had to calculate the date and time in relation to the moons location to actually GET the ship there! Manual calculation, computer calculation, 24hrs off. One of the engineers at NASA knew of the these 2 brothers and suggested that NASA contact them to see if they can help fix the problem. They did, and when the brothers answered, they said that NASA forgot about God stopping time for Ezekiel in the Bible.
Now guess what? NASA put in that data and BINGO! The space window was now correct and the ship would now meet the moon as needed......I always wondered why NASA didn't simply MOVE the window the 24 hrs to make it work first.....Hell we spent millions on making a PEN that works in space so Astronauts could write.....The Russians spent nothing! They sent up PENCILS!!

Let me tell you one of many...I was doing Ferris wheels for the Bill Lynch show that once operated on the east coast of Canada. The boss figured if he kept me in remote places he'd keep me from getting any smoke. I can remember standing in this huge empty parking lot at an abandoned truck stop "thinking", fat chance of getting anything around here, so while standing against a lamp pole in this no person land I asked the almighty if he could help with this situation. No sooner than I asked for help this 440 Dodge came ripping through the parking lot doing donuts etc. They came to a screeching halt along side me and the guy said, "You wanna buy some hash man?".
