Can anyone recommend how to mix a good soil? I've researched for hours and nothing good has turned up.I wanted to buy fox farms soil but I've heard making my own soil is a lot cheaper and lasts a lot longer.Any ideas to make this simple would be appreciated....

This is a few things I have found at a local store

3.8cu ft bale of premier hort peat poss
40lb bag of composted organic forest hummus
40lb bag of dolomite lime
perlite
organic worm castings
vermiculite

Look up Subcool's super soil mix. He recently gave detailed instructions on how to formulate it. I'm using it now with great results and all I use for ferts is a little molassas (5th week flowering) and some cal-mag due to my RO water system is lacking in minerals. I'll try to find a link to it but it's great shit. I don't even have leaves yellowing and I'm within a couple of weeks to harvest (+/- a week). The only draw back is that it takes longer to get them to flower due to the hot soil (N). It took me three weeks to see flowering when I went to 12/12 but that's probably why I don't have yellowing now.

Just do a search for Subcool on this site and you'll see a ways down in his section "revised super soil" 2010. Good luck!

if your not a pro...dont do it. I wasted alot of running around looking for the certain ingredients to make my own super soil. I ended up with FFOF. If your subcool then you good.

I'm no pro just an old med guy growing my own stuff. I was lucky and found most of the ingredients at one store. I picked up bat guano at the hydro store though and bought the low N bat shit. Any well stocked "established" garden supply store (not Lowes or HD) carry that blood and bone meal and small packages of prilled dolomite. I also cut Sub's reciept down by over 75% as I only needed about 150 lb. of hot soil. I used one bag of Roots Organic, one bag of Warrior Light and added 25 lb. of local primo potting soil. I used 5 gal (Lowes buckets) containers when I transplanted and used hot soil on the bottom 60% of the container. The damn leaves were so pumped at first they were sticking almost straight up. No leave curl ever. I'm not knocking Ocean Forrest / Light Warrior and have used a lot of that in the past but I don't have any yellow leaves and the plants are still alive for a change nearing the end of the flowering cycle. Also my nute bill was $zero this time. If you care I'll add pix, if not have a nice day!!

I've tried all the combos of soil and soiless, this is what I use and will continue to use
pro-mix bx
20%
worm castings,vermiculite,perlite#3

works the best, pro-mix is a soiless mix with lots of mico. you'll have less issues with bugs and such and you can really pump up the ppms if you want. Ocean forest has p.h problems, you have to adjust for it.
