making a tincture!

Started a tincture this passed Sunday, little nervous, used 2 oz's of kush bud, no clippings. It looks funny the everclear turned dark green almost black with a creamy substance in the middle and the weed on the bottom of the mason jar. Seven more days! Hope it works!

nice!

Hope you don't mind if I put up some suggestions :)

the key to making a good tincture (or oil, or extracted hash) is the solvent used. You want a non-polar solvent (something that absorbes little or no water soluble material. Alcohol works well (both ethanol and isopropyl), however without buying as a liquor, most ethanol is denatured, and without knowing what it is denatured with, you have no idea how to ensure it is properly removed. Everclear has a lot of water in it, so it's not the greatest solvent to use (and is partly responsible for the darker color of your oil). Isopropyl can be bought from 99% to 99.995% pure, which is better, but isopropyl also is water soluble, so again is less ideal (just more ideal than everclear because you can get it much more pure).

Acetone is even better, and is as safe as alcohols (health wise, it's much more flammable and quicker to cause irritation if you breath the fumes), so keep that in mind. It's much less water soluable, so you will get a more pure oil extraction, however if you are talking about a true tincture you would have to use acetone to extract oil, then after all the acetone is removed, you can mix with 99%+ isopropyl to make a true tincture.

Petroleum ether (not to be confused with real ether) and chloroform are two of the best solvents, but are rather dangerous, and hard to obtain without credentials linking you to a university or research facility. Do not underestimate how dangerous these substances are. Pet ether is extremely flamable, can become unstable when mixed with air, and also is dense so it tends to form a layer of volatile fumes over your floor that don't easily dissipate. Chloroform is not flammable, but the fumes can kill you fairly easily.

Butane works well, but I have always suspected that it is less thorough than refluxing because of the short contact time. On a nice note though, the setup to extract using butane is less than $5 to build, the butane is only $4-$8 to process an oz of herb (this is the cheapest I have found it at least), and the extraction itself takes only 30-40 min. The oil derived from the butane process is very pure, similar to what you would get using isopropyl as an extractant and pet ether to purify (basically makes honey oil).

If you are going to use one of the non-butane methods, you might want to read up a bit on Soxhleting, this is the proccess I have used successfully to do non-butane extractions. You can find instructions on how to do butane extraction all over the net, just search google for 'butane hash oil'.

Edit: If you're interested in more info on this stuff, a great book to get is Cannabis Alchemy by D. Gold. He discusses many forms of chemical and mechanical extraction, as well as interesting subjects like how to convert CBD back into activated THC, and other interesting manipulations of chemistry.

Thanx for the input. I've tried the butane, works well and cheap. Didn't think it would be healthy for cooking, I want to make lolly-pops. Would also like to use low heat (150 degrees) to evaperate the alcohol. Hoping this will render more of a solid. Again thanx for imput, will certainly check out that book.

It turned out great! Finnaly evaperated most the alcohol off, left a nice thick oil. Made rootbeer hard candies. The oil is great for dipping joints in too.
