Maintaining Seeds

I like to grow 1 seed of different strains (6-7 plants total at a time), so when a few turn male I like to pollenate the tohers with them to try to make something new. Now as a result I wind up with lots of different seeds that I want to keep viable as long as possible. I've read to cure the seeds with the bud for a month to ensure they are properly evenly dried through (the seeds).

Now after that what are the best ways I can keep my seeds viable for the longest time? I live in hawaii where our temps range from 68-85 and our humidity from 70%-90%. So we have a different environment for both. I dont' sell seeds but I want them to last in case i find something special and want to create a strain thats perfect for my personal medical needs. any equipment out there that keeps seeds viable? Any suggestions on how to better the quality of my seed collection for safe storage?

Currently I keep my seeds in smaller ziplocks in a box to keep them dark. but any tips on not having a box full of useless seeds in 3 years is appreciated. I've heard put in tupperware in the fridge, but fridges are both humid and crisp and i'm not sure which spot is best for them.

Thanks! +rep

I store in glass jars with the silicon humidity catchers in them.
In an ac'ed room on a shelf in florida for many years.
Seems after about 5 years the germ rates really start to drop off but have seen 20 year old seed pop no probs just not very many.
I just do a seed run when ever I feel the need, fuck buying beans.

I put my seeds in small envelopes, these envelopes in an index card box, and this card box in the crisper in the bottom of my fridge. I have two big packs of silica gel in there.

But i just started storing seeds so I'm not sure how viable they will be. I got my setup after reading how othes were doing it.

Good luck.

Hey tardis,

I store my seeds in a container like the one on the picture with some rice grains and that container in a aluminum box which is in a bigger aluminum box with other seeds and stuff put in a corner of my wardrobe in my room. The oldest seeds I have are two years old and I still got an 100% germination rate so far. Not saying is the best way to do it, but it worked for me so far, just sharing info ;)

Also I saw in the marihuana shops they store them in low humidity fridges, I don't know the price but there are some that are smaller, the size of a microwave and definitely the best option.

Also there are some silicon balls as taint said that change color depending on the humidity level, this way when they change color you know that they have absorb all the humidity they could and you could change the balls for new balls or make those balls dry again to reuse them. I believe there are some silica gels that also change color and you can do the same, when it's wet, make it dry and reuse.

Cheers

I'm not saying you should do this, but honestly, I just put them in a little baggie, tossed em in the freezer, and I still get like a 95% germ rate 2 years later. I thought they were no good, so I tossed em outside, and i'm still pluckin sproutlings out of my yard...and they germed in AWFUL soil with no nutrients in it, and in 65 degree weather...kinda funny actually...But those were shitty sativa's, nothing worthwhile.
I wouldn't recommend it if the seeds are near and dear to you, and you don't want to risk it. Being compromised genetically is risk.

HOWEVER some seeds I had in that same setup are being grown by a friend. We'll see how they do, but they're about 1.4 months along now and he hasn't complained yet so...it's really kinda up to you. If your storing 20 of the same seed, it'll prob be fine, I just put them in a baggie and stored them at the VERY BOTTOM under the drawer at the bottom of the freezer.

Good luck.
