Mainlining - Identifying Nodes

Hey all,

Almost ready to start the mainlining adventure here. I am going to follow Nebula's manifold technique, which you wait until the 6th node appearing before topping.

My question is, when do we start counting nodes? Do the first set of leaves (the single blade, serrated leaves ) count in this process? Or do we start counting once we start seeing normal fan leaves?

Is the attached picture the proper way to count nodes?

I always start counting from the first set of 3 finger leaves. I don’t count the 1 finger nodes. Hope that helps.

Also please note this is for a Micro Grow - 24inch plants are desired.

These are the 2 babies I'm looking to mainline today based on nodes.

Thoughts?

I just top, train, top again and train some more. What size space are you trying to fill? I have a GG#4 that I’ve trained to be about 3ft+ wide.

Probably won't be going for 3ft wide - Looking for something smaller maybe 1.5-2ft max width

Also, how much do you let the 6th node grow before topping? Would you consider, in your opinion, either of these plants above acceptable to top today?

You can top right now for sure but the training takes time. Top at the 3rd node starting from the first set of 3 finger leaves. So you just want a tiny plant? I’d flip to flower sooner than later and wouldn’t mainline. I’d top and train .

You would be just fine topping above the 3rd node as labeled in you're pic.

Yes especially if your trying to keep it smaller you wanna do all that early and flip to flower early too. Can I get some more info. Lights, strain, medium, nutes etc

Yeah, we're doing different experiments to see how it works in our setup. We did topping/supercropping as well as some LST with tying down branches last run. This run we will introduce fimming and mainlining to see how that works. Those plants pictured are starting their 4th week of being in soil on Thursday. We are planning on doing a 3-4 week veg then straight into flower for 8 weeks.

Lights we are currently running 320W LED @ 5k, 20/4 on/off, apprx 26.4k Lumens.

Soil is a mixture of Natures Care Organic Garden Soil & Natures Care Organic Potting Soil with varrying pot sizes from 1.5gal-3gal

Strain - unknown, random seeds we had left over

Nutes - minimal right now. Used a 4-10-3 diluted to 1/3 strength during transplanting from germ and then to bigger pots

We aren't major growers, and on a budget right now. I know the medium is not optimal nor the nutrients. And yes not knowing what strain you have also is suboptimal.

We were however, able to grow some really nice plants using these methods in our last run. See attached.

We made our own light system using 16 Ecosmart adjustable range LED bulbs each at 19.5W

16 now, in 2 weeks we will have 24 bulbs in there

The cotyledons dont count as a node for mainlining.

If the 6th node is really showing, the rebound from topping is almost instant. If you go after node 5 shows, it can slow down for 2 to 3 days.

We’ll just remember when you flip, your plant is gonna stretch. If you only want 2ft tall or so your gonna want to start bending her over immediately. If you want to keep it Short top it and train it early and flip it early. It’ll double in height when you flip possibly.

We topped 2 of them, I think it was at 5 true nodes based on your counting method mac. We'll do another 2 plants when they show true 6 and that should be enough mainline experimenting for this run.

As for bending her over immediately........off to the grow room!

There a dude called Bill that does a lot with mars lights on YouTube,I followed his style with my auto this time round.Im amazed at just how big she got ,used lst swarmi and Kyle kushman technique. She's just starting to get a little bit of color to the leaf tips .Nice looking gal,the last one I did the bud was just incredible realy Terpy.Training started at around 6 inch .Any smaller you just creating a bent stem.At 6 inch all those side branches become new tops.The last bit of training was done yesterday .I took a fair few leafs off.Just to get more light into the plant and more important air.There is only around 4/5 inch on the end of each stem,so that all the growth is been pumped into those nugs.Shes around 4 week into flower.This strain cheese cake and creme brulee I can definitely recommend.
