Magnesium & Epsom salt

All green plants contain chlorophyll - it is chlorophyll that makes them green - and it is the chemical properties of chlorophyll that is essential to photosynthesis, the process by which plants use sunlight to make sugar, which is then used to form body tissues.

Every molecule of chlorophyll contains one atom of the metallic element magnesium (symbol Mg) so the presence of Mg is absolutely essential for green plants to live and grow, and especially in our interests for cannabis to flower and form buds. An early sign of Mg deficiency is the yellowing of leaves - a loss of green colouring, OK. But there are lots of other causes of leaf yellowing, a nitrogen deficiency being one - but this is comparatively rare as we routinely feed nitrogen containing fertilisers. And whilst some plant fertilisers do contain Mg, many contain none at all.

So how do we protect against a deficiency of this vital element? Epsom salt is hydrated magnesium sulphate, MgSO4, any chemist will sell you a tin for pennies. And a little goes a long way. Give your girls a feed of Epsom salt at a strength of 1 teaspoon per gallon, just 2 or 3 times during the grow, and they will have more than enough magnesium to meet their needs. Some folks dig Epsom salt into their soil, but you really only need to provide a small amount.

Agreed.

It's good stuff, but like most good stuff gets way overdone. Like you said, 2 or 3 applications/grow are more than enough.

I haven't had Mg deficiency in a long time, but one foliar treatment with epsom salts always worked.

It should also be mentioned that certain strains ( from my experience ) will start shedding large fan leaves once they start flowering I assume to provide more nutrients to flowers. This should not be mistaken for a deficiency as it can cause you to overfertilze and stress your plants. A well established nute regimen can prevent this from becoming a concern. I grow outdoors, and scatter a tablespoon of epsom salts around the base of each plant about once a month.

It would be better to preserve those leaves by avoiding the deficiency which causes them to drop during early flowering (more Mg and N demand at that time than almost any other).

I just rolled into this forum for the first time and you're discussing a topic that has plagued my produce for ten years - the loss of leaves during flowering. The loss of leaves results in only a single harvest per plant and a short life-span during harvest. I also have a problem with small bud size. The potency is acceptable but bud volume appears smaller than commercially available product. Any suggestions? - Thanks.

Nitrogen needs to be given all throughout your grow cycle up until flushing, this is often neglected as people think the plant needs more P and K with less N during flowering. It's more like equal amounts with perhaps more P

I add 2 TBS. per 2 gals of water plus 2 TBS of Tiger Bloom every watering, and every 2 weeks I dose them with a couple TBS of Mollasses.
I'm not too worried about loosing a few leaves because they are in their Flower time.
I could be wrong but so far it's working.
