MAGNESIUM Deficiency? BAD leaf curl *PICS*

As the leaves began to curl upwards and rust brown colors appeared on older leaves I began to think it was a magnesium deficiency.

My water is hard at 200ppm's so I figured MG was getting locked out.

I added 1 teaspoon/gal of epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) to try to correct the solution. Should I be doing aynthing else?

Did i miss it completely?

Epsom salts are having little effect after 4 days.

pH and adjustments and the forum cure-all of whatever ails ya, epsom salts, is not causing your problems. BTW, I'd be blessed to have a TDS of 200. How's 790 fer ya?

Rust colored spots are usually caused by too high a PPM of salts (nutes).

Floranova what? If it's the Grow formula it contains Mg but the NPK sux - 7-4-10 is NOT a good food to support foliage production. Again, GH has it bass ackwards on their NPK values. It should be a 10-4-7 unless for some reason water plays into the uptake potential.

That high amount of K will cause a N lockup as well as Ca and Mg. I don't why these hydro manufacturers do this (screw up the NPK) but most do.

First a question, if a nutrient is getting locked out, why would you add a bunch of it to your res? If Mg is getting locked out, pouring a heap more in your res isn't going to solve your problem, you have to resolve the lockout before your plant will be able to use it. Basically what you are doing is putting someone who is choking in a room full of oxygen they can't even use. Gotta get those metaphorical chicken wings out of their metaphorical throats before your plants can breath again, know what I mean?

Change the water in your res first, you have to get all of those salts out of there, they're whats probably causing the lockout, that buildup of salt(salts=chicken wing). I have always read that Mg is locked out at a low ph and by excess fertilizer salts. When you put new water in your res, up the ph a little bit, I'd say somewhere in the 5.8-6.0 range, and keep the ppm low(this is the fresh air). If all goes well, your plant should start to utilize the Mg already present in your nutrient solution(no chicken wing + clean fresh air = yay they can breathe), any additional Mg added will just create new problems.

With that said, I have never had good luck with epsom salts, they always just seem to make the problem worse.
