When I was growing in soil with bigger plants I did lots of LST as well as topping to get the stems to split where I wanted. I tried to keep the growth even around the plant, and make it spread out into a growth manifold. The manifold should be sturdy and ready to support the weight of the buds. Using these techniques allowed me to grow some full sativa genetics indoors with ease, and definitely helps control the growth of the plant and where it directs its energy.
