Lots of clones, lots of stress? Mother question

Hey guys,

Just a quick question, i have 3 mothers growing, and they will be supplying about 80-90 clones next week. This will cause them to get cut back quite severely, but i want to keep the girls going after that, will this high level of chopping stress them out enough to turn hermie?

A pic

Thanks guys!

If your genetics are stable.... No you wont turn them Hermie... that's not worst case senario.... you'll just kill them.... you've cloned before right?

Good Luck! 80-90 ambitious even if you are experienced....

This is why i am asking, cloned before, yes, but not on this scale, and i cannot spread it out, it is wham bam, thank you girls. Can be spread over 24 hours max.

I didn't expect to hear it will kill the plant, i cannot see how that is possible. Other plants survive extreme pruning. I will be taking as many cuttings as i need, not as many as the plant can provide, so there will be still vegetation left. I wouldn't strip it to a twig.

My plan was to start from the top and work down, keeping all main branches, only taking offshoots that provide clones like this.

As you can see, 2 fan leaves, 2 nodes. This was taken when they were cut and 8 hours later. You can see they look a bit droopy in the first shot, that was due to them growing against the side of the tent or into my scrog net. They soon righted themselves.

But yeah, these mommas are going to get butchered. This will only be a one time thing, once these clones get grown out a bit, a single cutting will be taken from each of them, then half a dozen from each mother to top up and cover any failed or poor cuttings. I suppose i will have to just wait and see how they react and if needs be, replace them. Poor girls. They have been so good.

the best thing to do is to cut the entire plant down except for the very bottom. of the stem. you cut the big stem right off the plant. and leave a very small nodes remaining . and you can take all the clones you want with out worrying about stressing the plant. just 1 or 2 cuts. and the plant is not trying to recover in 40 different places at once. water the plant a bit heavy after you cut it. pinch off the stem. because its hollow . this is what I do and they grow back with in a few months . nice and sexy looking very bushy. less stress the better. because if you stress that mom it will produce some funky looking flowering plants.

Hi Green Troll,
Never has a clone Momma herm after taking cuttings. Try and take a bonsai approach to trimming. Leave what remaining branches will give the Momma a pleasing and balanced appearance. Form follows function. They survive and become even better Mommas.

thank guys! the bonsai style method was what i planned. i also like the "just chop it" method, i might do one of each and see how they react.

I was going to say exactly what GrowinDad said... just pull a couple of the best clones for mother candidates.

I've got a *very* stable Jack Herer Mom I've had for quite a few months, and I have pruned her down to Charlie Brown Christmas Tree status, and she's still ticking :)

That said, I always have backup Mom candidates.

yeah the back ups will be available, i want 80-90 clones for a 64 plant grow, so i will have spares :) but, i just get attached to my girls, you know?
