lost 20 seeds

I tried my first coco fiber and lost 20 seeds coco not good for seed starting? they came up fine and 48 hours later all dead. I got the coco for free so I just thought I'd try it.

Fuck coco !

Brand of coco? Some of the coco out there has high salt content that needs to be rinsed off.
Did the plants all die simultaneously?

They died with in 12 hours of each other. My dad gave it to me he had already thrown it in a black trash bag. I'll just throw it in compost.

I failed miserably when I attempted to grow in coco. It was a grower I met here who convinced me to give it a try. I visited his garden and saw nice vegging plants. he also convinced me cfl's were sufficient. Both notions failed for me, fuck coco, cfl's, molasses and fuck him.

his plants took 12=15 weeks to finish, like ak47, og kush, never ambered, no nose, massive vegging though, lots of vegetable material to go through, whispy buds, a million cfl's and daily molasses too. I figured it out quickly though, read a book and never looked back till today.

So because you failed makes it suck?
I have grown in coco from like 5 different brands, canna coco was the cleanest no need to rinse.
Quality grows with all, its the grower not the medium.

OP - did you cut the coco with perlite? How close did you have them to the light? My guess is they were too close or you started the seeds in big pots and drowned them.

yes exactly. I believe coco sucks because it did suck for me , have no misunderstanding

Sorry to hear about your coco troubles, maybe something else was going like @waterproof808 and @jwreck were saying. Coco has been great to me, only thing i noticed is a slow first week or so when starting. getting the right amount of water is a balance, rinsing isnt a must with some brands but is probably always recommended to rinse and charge your coco(i try to microwave all the coco used for starting plants too for sterilization...might be unnecessary ). also solo cups with good drainage start em off well.

i havent had one pest problem yet with coco, just saying

Ive had very good results planting seeds and clones right into coco / perlite. The more perlite the better if your willing to keep up with the waterrings.

Killings 20 seeds in one single day is obviously not common and something drastic happened in your situation. Blame the cat

Sorry to hear about your loss. I'm sure most of us have had plant death happen and it always sucks.

Fox Farms coco loco is decent. Lots of nutes, but yeah, gotta flush it first for babies

Seems a waste of time and effort to have to flush your media before you can use it. I get ProMix and it's ready to go right out of the bag. Fill the pot, drop in a seed and you're off to the races. ProMix makes coco media too but we just get the regular peat-base stuff here and that's fine by me. I still have a big brick of compressed coco I tried 15 years ago. I had no idea that it needed flushing and it screwed up my plants back then and I've never used it since. Can't get it here and I have no desire to go looking for it.

Yea, you have a point! And I takevthat back about coco loco, I looked at the bag and it says triple washed, low salt content. So I was just flushing nutes to make it less hot. And when I get 2 cubic ft for $12 I can't go wrong!

I used organic ProMix and had the largest Gnat infestation ever. Went back to roots organic and no problems. I have seen great results with coco but after I watched a friend ruin his entire grow I keep to soil.

Almost any soil or soilless media can pick up gnats between the time it comes out of the production facility and gets to you. The little buggers will lay eggs in any little hole in the bag and it can be chock full of gnat larvae by the time you open it. I mainly do DWC but have been getting into soil/soilless blends and about ready to go back to DWC full time. I've never been that good at dirt farming but do way better with hydro so why fight it. I'll grow twice as much bud in half the time and it's so simple I barely have to think about what I'm doing to get good results.

About 15 years ago I bought a couple bags of really good organic soil that would likely be the equivalent of Fox Farms stuff. First time I ever encountered gnats and when I checked the unopened bag it was full of larvae so went to soilless for plants I grew in pots.

Now when I open a new bag of anything I dig in and take a small sample to check for bugs. I put a tsp in a shot glass then fill to the rim with water and stir gently. Then put a piece of paper towel across the top to pick up anything that floats and check the flotsam with my 30X scope. If there are any larvae present they will be there.

Thats pretty interesting. I will have to look into that for checking the soil. Now I throw a layer of sand and gnat nix over my soil and gnats have no place to lay their eggs and life is so much better in the tent. I would love to try hydro but its hard to break habit from years of dialing in my norm. I use a pot up method now and it really reminds me of a hydro set up being able to throw more plants in a smaller space.

If a Grow room or tent has continuing gnat problems look to the environment. Humidity is the problem. Less watering. More airflow. Etc.
