Long slow drying questions...

They are but when drying you have to take into consideration the curing. You cannot over dry.

For what its worth i hang whole with all leaves etc for 2 to 3 weeks depending. Buck when going into cure.
I wanted to hang them whole but just don't have the space, so I had to cut them into sections/individual branches. I left all the leaves on to experiment with a dry trim, which I've never done before. Thanks for the info.

My plants are more spaced out though. I could probably go longer if I dried them close together I guess but I hate mold and only ever got it in my thickest colas when I had a tiny packed space for drying. I could probably add a few days on the line if I dry the first night spaced and then slide them together more tightly to make room for the new stuff.
If there was mold then spores was already present in the buds. You should look into bud washing before you hang. I add a peroxide to water in a 5 gallon bucket and swish the buds in that. Every once in a while I will get a bud that sizzles the solution and that let's me know there was mold starting to happen. Not only does it kill the spores but you rinse off all that dust and bird shit...pollen...all kinds of shit comes off your buds and you get the smoothest cleanest smoke ever.

P.s. I have 2 buckets usually. Onr with the peroxide water and one with just plain water. Hope that you try hanging a bit longer and try rinsing a few buds just to do a side by side test and see how much better the smoke is. Seriously a game changer.

Last year when i dried, that was my first harvest btw, i found that they still didnt really retain their flavour and smell. I live in South Africa which is quite warm even when you get to drying stages. Its also a hot and dry heat where i am. So im thinking would i need firstly a relatively cool place, my garage will be perfect i think, but then would i need a humidifier or something to keep the humidity relative, while the temperature should be around 20 degrees or so Celsius which is about 68 Fahrenheit. Still abit high. Basically all the bud was dried within a week and that was inside my house lmao

I appreciate the drying tips and will try to go for a longer dry period. I normally dry in my basement but, since I chopped down several trees in my yard, my basement is flooded with light in the afternoons. How dark do I need my drying area to be? I have used my laundry room (which stays dark during the day) on occasion in the past but the missus complains when I don't let her use the dryer. Even in the best of circumstances my buds tend to dry out in about 4 days.

I’ve heard of doing this but doesn’t that go against what is said about dense buds and moisture getting trapped inside and such?

You can submerse the buds rinse them off and just hang after a good shake? Could it be that easy? Lol really though, I thought water and big fat buds don’t go together...

It's legit and works incredibly well ... it cleans off any shit hanging out on the surface of the buds... I used to think the same thing, its insane to dunk your biggest colas into buckets of water, but once you try it, you'll never go back... i set up a 5 gal bucket filled with reg water with 1 cup hydrogen peroxide... then rinse them in a 2nd bucket with just fresh water... then hang them in front of a fan for about an hour... then final trim and final hang dry

Thanks for posting the pics! So is it recommended to have a fan blowing that close after you wash?

I think I’m going to go for it!

Would I be able to do this with a 68F and 48-50%RH closet? I want the same as the OP, a long and slow dry...but without a little humidifier in there it gets to 41% and a little lower so im worried it'll dry too fast. Would I be able to go 2-3wks at 50% with the humidifier or should I trim it up at a certain time before then? All drying of course not curing...

id love to be able to answer ur question but at the end of the day everyone's environment is different. Im in the sub tropics so have a highr RH majority of the time.

Should you not trim in the same room your drying in? I harvested one plant about 5 days ago and cut into large segments, wet trimmed it and hung it in the drying room. But I just realized the next plants that I harvest it will take a couple hours to trim, requiring the light to be on. Will a couple hours of artificial light degrade the tricomes?

It just kinda sucks cause it's very nice comfy big metal container to trim in. And the main reason I chose it was cause its hidden from my crazy schizo brother. Of course our luck he's went on another episode during harvest time and threatens to steal all the plants. So I got be super undercover about when harvesting. The metal container was well hidden away from him.

If you have the room that would be fine. A little artificial light as they dry wont be a noticeable loss if any.- You loose trichs whilst trimming anyway. they get knocked and rubbed off -always use a trim tray if you like dry sift if your a small grower. I dont know if its worth the effort for large plant growers like GG.

My closet is dialed in to stay at about 60-65F and 50-55%RH so it's not very far off from what you have going on... sometimes they hang for 5 days and they're ready, other times they hang for 7-10 days before they're ready... I check the buds daily when hanging, and what I'm looking for first is the buds to be dry on the outside... then I'll try to peel back an average size bud and when its ALMOST able to snap off the main stem I'll buck down into a paper bag ... from there i monitor them closely ... I'll usually leave the bag open for a few days then close it up and open a couple times a day and move everything around... some people don't use paper bags, they just hang until they're happy then buck down straight into jars... I've done it that way plenty of times, and with huge harvests that all come in at the same time, it certainly can be much easier... but I find I get a much slower, controllable dry with the paper bag, and it allows the moisture to balance out across all the buds equally

In the end, I think the key to understand is that there is no magic number of days to hang, it's completely dependent on the environment, air movement, size of the buds, etc ... I've only chopped one plant so far this season and it hung for 5 days, and has been in the bags with the top open for 3 more days now ... from what I can tell I'll probably be closing it up later today and they'll end up in jars sometime early next week

Yes it is recommended to throw in front of a fan for a bit. I dont do it but many do... and I would encourage to go by the rules. I personally just have way to many buds to do it that way.
I would also encourage some of you to try out dry trimming. Not only does it protect the buds from getting the kief knocked off but also re releases that wonderful smell when you do trim it up. Also the added leaves slow the drying time down.

Here is why I can't hang in front of fans... the ones on floor is waiting for the new buckets of fresh water and mixture. 20181031_180111.jpg

My only issue with dry trim is its easier to lose more trichomes when trimming. They basically fall off so that's why i decided to wet trim. But I left some sugar leaves on and didn't trim ridiculously close like the dispensaries!

That is why I own a trim tray. I catch everything that falls
