Well, I wrote my congressmen. He sent me this reply, this guy is a congressmen?! He literally said "I do not agree with the statement our law enforcers should be targeting more serious crimes." So what lets just worry about weed, for now we can put that rape case in the shredder it's more important to worry about them damn pot token hippies. He's republican, so I figured this much would come from him, thought I should try though.

Thank you for taking the time to contact me regarding H.R. 5843, the Act to Remove Federal Penalties for the Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults. Your input is important to me, and I appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts.

I understand your viewpoint that we should decriminalize marijuana. However, I believe that marijuana is a gateway drug -- one of the most commonly abused illicit drugs in our country. Marijuana use can result in significant health problems, and I do not agree with the viewpoint that marijuana users are not part of the problem. I also do not agree with the statement that our law enforcement should be targeting more serious crimes. Drug use, I believe, is a serious issue that we must address to prevent our future generations from ending up in jail on drug-related offenses. People that use this drug are breaking the law and they should be held accountable.

Despite your opinion that marijuana should be legal, the court systems in our nation have continued to view marijuana as an illegal substance. I know that decriminalizing marijuana has been taken up by individual states, and some of our states have legalized the drug for medicinal reasons. I contend that legalizing marijuana would be harmful to our society, and that doing so would put more people at risk. While I appreciate your input, I do not support the legalization of marijuana.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me on this important issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future should you need any further assistance.

Now you know. Spread the word to everyone you know in your district if there are enough, he will feel the heat. If not, it's biz as usual.

Good job on contacting your Congressman on this issue. +rep.

I am happy he responded to you on this issue. He told you the truth about his position.

Now it's your job to find a more suitable replacement for this incumbent.

I can't believe this guy was brainless enough to make the above statements.

If the stuff was decriminalized then his points he's trying to make above are mute.

Also, alcohol is the biggest gateway drug. I don't know of anyone who tried marijuana without having gotten high on alcohol at some point before the first experimental pot use. I am sure there are a few but the vast majority of pot smokers tried alcohol first.

His reply is really sad. He says that "Marijuana use can result in significant health problems" which is contrary to most available evidence and all his other arguments are completely circular, ie, "the reason I do not believe it should be legalized is that it is illegal."

How do they get away with this bullshit year after year?

lol damn republicans
could just as easily be a democrat. bunch of spineless assholes, most of them.
