I've been tinkering around and want to set up an experiment but before I do, I was hoping to have some general thoughts on the process. And before this becomes a sterile hydro VS live hydro I've run both sterile and live res's before and I'm partial to live ones. So my question is this... Has anyone ever tried to throw in a compost tea bag into a res before? I was thinking of using an 80-micron silk bag and putting my compost tea in there then just handing it over the side and in the res for a week or two. I've read a lot of guys get slime and what not, but it makes me wonder if they have enough oxygen within the water as well as a temp controlled res. From what I am figuring, as long as I have enough beneficial's in my res, keep the temp controlled and around 65-68F, and keep enough oxygen in the water, I shouldn't develop any anaerobic bacteria and therefore avoid the slime and rot. In theory, the beneficial bacterium should be able to secure and hold onto the biological niche and not let any unfavorable bacteria take over and cause the rot. I've also read somewhere that an old method of "fixing" root rot is to make beneficial bacteria tea's and putting them into your res to allow them to overtake the bad bacteria, effectively eliminating it from the res. Honestly, it seems that the entire purpose of brewing a tea is to feed the beneficial in the media and that the broken down available nutrients are a secondary benefit. Let me know what you all think, im curious to see if this is possible or just a pipe dream.
