Lights/Lumens advice needed?

I have a 400w MH (veg) and 600W HPS (Flower) for my grow, but notice my plants never look like they are really going for the light. Thats prob a bag explanation, so check out these pics from Ichi! They are totally going for it;

That got me thinking, why are my plants not doing the same? I had a little nute burn in early in veg, but its now going into the 5th week of veg (6th since seed)

My 400w MH is roughly 15 inch away...is that too far?

I have a cooltube for my 6oow hps...so can get it pretty close.

I was going to buy a lumen measurement device to see what they are giving out.


Im stuck with this one, I just want my plants to be looking the same as you guys

The picture you use as an example of what you are wanting for your plants is not ideal actually. The upward cupping of leaves is indiative of light being scarce and happens when a very bushy plant has many tops, all of which are competing for the available light. As long as your plants show no sigh of stretching they are getting enough light, the 'reaching' for light is not a sign of anything other than competition and lights being slightly too far away.

I am wondering also about the distance of my 400w MH to the top of my plants, during veg.

I am keeping them 14 inches away. But when I put my hand, either side, it doesn't feel too warm to me even at 6 inches.

Duh.....

I have a thermometer right on the Box (top of plants), and it does not get over 75 degrees.

back of hand method is the tried and tested method used since the beginnning of time. If it doesnt burn your hand it wont burn your plants. FACT!

Like Golddog, I cound put the 400W MH very close before it starts to get warm...i will lower it today. I used both bulbs during my last grow...maybe I should think about buying a new set.

Oh and I assumed the upward pointing leaves were a good sign...glad I found that out! Thanks Woomeister
