I used to have 3 air cooled hoods on a 5.0 mover and with all that weight I could hear it at night when the house was quiet, just like you described.
I ditched the hoods and grow with bare bulbs hanging vertically now and it is silent.

Yeah, I would assume so too, except that this is brand new. Just bought a few days ago. My 4.0 light rails don't make this noise, but this 3.5 sure does. Its driving me nuts.
For sure that would be much more ideal, but I can't control the temps without cooling the bulbs.
Nice, Do you think if I just put styrofoam board underneath the 2x4 it would work the same? How exactly did you do it? Did you install the sytrofoam board first, then put the 2x8, then the aluminum track?

Are you running a "add a light" rail or anything? I was looking at the 4.2 which basically has the extra hanger for the second light. If your 4.0 is noisy without venting or a 2nd light, I could imgaine that extra weight would only make it worse! Damn...
How loud is it compare to a 6'' inline fan? Could you hear it outside of a garage, that is my real question?

Shit. Sorry I have 5.0
It was mounted to basement I beams and the rail would reverberate through the floor. I fixed it and it's silent now

No added light just LEDs. Was only loud because being on I beam. You can't hear it now standing in room.

I wanted the 5.0 but the website cautioned against it if you have air-cooled hood with ducting. So, I am looking into the 4.0... I appreciate the comments. I just remembered, I am running a Eco commerical 7 air pump and no way can the rail be louder than it is! It makes a great tea brew though...
