18/6 (on/off) or 24/0 for veg. 12/12 will start and keep them flowering.

so if i were to start a plant from seed, i would (after germination and ground breaking) start a 24/0 or 18/6, for how long, and then when do i start 12/12, could i just start 12/12 right off the bat and still have a successful grow and bloom without messing with the lights again? thanks

You can stay on 24/0 or 18/6 as long as you want, the plant won't start to flower until you switch to 12/12. Yes you can start with 12/12 but you will sacrifice yield.

That depends, generally when you make the switch to 12/12 the plants will double, or even triple in size...so with that being said if you have three feet of overhead space you'll want to make the switch at about 1 foot. It is all up to you though, training can change your timeframes...you could let it go longer that way and end up with more bud.
