So at 2 ft away, a 400w hps is 3979 lumens...?

This is just for Hps though.
From which I understand should be roughly 18" from plants.
you did not see one for cfl , hid, or fluro did you?

i like MH and HPS more then floros and cfls because of the stretching i hate that

Well of course they are better sources of light.

MH Chart:

only one small problem with that chart, it says its ok to have a 1000w at 9 inches and 10 inches for the hps, that is going to fry your plants.
