I didn't know the hid light needed a ballast.. Shit. Why can't I just put the bulb In a normal socket...

I wanted to add, that 400 watt for $35 or whatever at HD is not a HID, it is a Halogen, which is also crap, and not worth growing with...
Throw away the old school light...
When you have an extra $13.00
go buy two 6500K CFL 23 watts--$9.65 or so...
buy a single to double screw in light splitter --$2.47 or so...
And use that on your plant, then every time you get another $13.00 add another light pair...
Use the clamp on work shop lights with the dome reflector add another $7.50...
If you can not afford $23 towards your grow every pay period, then quit your grow now...
It's ok to start small, if you start smart...
Good Luck...

I have a box of cfls the light company sent me to help conserve power or whatever so I have to s of cfls. What I don't have and can't find is spliter sockets, seems lowes doesn't sell them anymore so I'd need to buy sockets seperatly of get a mount kit that's 10 dollars and only uses 2 bulbs

Yea I just found out about the striking on and voltage output and all that, if seems my best bet is going to be using the cfls. Since grow. Jobs don't require ballasts and I can get them at 5 dollars each can I go get 4-6 of those putting out 400-600 watts instead of running like 8 cfls or should I go cfls instead since I already have like 20 of 40 watt bulbs

Lowes was closer to home but ill stop in and look around see if I can find them. And I'm not at all offended here buy what you guys post, I told u I can take all harshness this isn't about me it's a out what's best for the afghani. I will keep adding cfls as many as I can for now and increase each week

they are in the bins with all the switches sockets and other socket/lighting stuff at HD

But really you should look into hid....believe it or not it is much easier to control the heat of hid as its all in one place whereas cfls will be everywhere

I'll do this then, when I get home ill set up some track lighting I have and use CFls with the grow bulb for now ill increase more CFls over time and eventually after I reap benefits from my grow I'll purchase a grow kit from amazon. I'll get the ballast the hood the hid light and a timer for 175$. That way my next grow will be better off. I have over 300 seeds so I'm not worried to much bout loosing 8 if this set up doesn't work. After i finish the grow room ill post a picture for u guys to see

Nice upgrade dude! Now raise those pots up to the light to as close as possible 1-3 inches. Or you could move the light down to them, either way. Next time just wait to feed the plants. The soil has food in it for them and your little plants would do much better will just PH water for the first couple weeks or so...maybe less. You'll learn to listen to your plants and they will tell you when they are hungry and that's when you you should start the nutes.
