light cycle question

Hi guys ive got the usual story, first time growing and unsure about something to do with my lighting cycle. My plants are a couple of weeks old and looking great so far in my cupboard, under a 400w MH light.

My problem is that the only way i can keep the temperature at a good level is by keeping the cupboard door a little bit open while the light is on. I already have 2 exhaust fans, its a space only just big enough. Im busy at college and work which means that sometimes im not home to shut the door during the 6 hours that its meant to have darkness. Is this just not gonna work for me? I need to know before i become any more attached!!!

Im aware that during the flowering stage (12/12) darkness is REALLY important, but is it the same for 18/6 veg? Some sites say that if you can afford it, 24 hours of MH light would be great during veg stage, which sort of implies that if a little bit of light is getting in during my 6 hours of dark time this would be ok for the moment right? im planning on being pretty accurate during 12/12 time but 18/6 just doesnt agree with my timetables. Thanks for any help, this is a great looking forum, i'm definitely gonna post pics when im done.

the rule of thumb is u only need perfect dark for flowering...but u dont want 24 for veg cause u need soem kind of dark for the plant to develop roots....hope this helps
