Someone posted a link where they were selling clones for up to $2000. That's just plain bullshit and anyone paying that is crazy as far as I'm concerned. Just like I think it's crazy to spend $1500 for enough LED lighting for a 4 x 4 tent but some people do.

Anyway, I probably don't really belong in some sections of this forum so I'll probably just post in the Advanced and Gardening sections where most talk is about the plant or plants from now on as it seems I'm on a different path than many. I'd much rather talk about the plant and it's propagation, making seeds and crosses than lighting spectrum's, diodes, and overpriced nutrients.

I'm not taking jab at you. So please don't take it that way. Just ranting. :blsmoke:

LED lighting is itself a hobby, as is what is grown under one. Some people like to danke in both hobbies at once lol

Energy savings and climate control gets more critical- and expensive- the larger the facility becomes.

I put buds grown under HID in one jar and the same strain grown with LED in another jar and put them side by side. People could tell the difference literally from across the room.

I have no light hobby but try to educate myself just as I educate myself on fluorocarbon fishing line as it is very advanced with peculiar qualities not present in nylon monos I used for 50+ years. I don’t have a line hobby either. That doesn’t mean I can’t learn and use the most efficient line in my fishing hobby. Similar situation.

So fluorocarbon line and white or white/red LEDs and COBs get used here.

Daaamn 1500 for a 4x4?!! The HLG 550 v2 is 1050 and i still find it expensive.

Lucky for me, i just build my own lights for under $1 per watt.

Not to be a dick but you could apply that to anything. Why advance medicine, cars, air planes, homes, clean energy?. Should we have just stopped advancement some time in the 1800's, earlier maybe?. Yes I agree you can go too far and over engineer a meaningless issue (automatic toilet lids) but for the most part the advancements made are in a good direction. Trouble is it costs money to advance and that means people like us need to buy products so that such company's can develop further. Who else is going to pay for it, governments?, they'll just increase taxes. One way or another we will pay for it and I don't see why it's a bad thing, unless you'd rather live in the wild.

I think you took that analogy a little to far. Led lights are more like cell phones where hps is like a wall phone. The gavita or spyder led might be like an iPhone but then you have hlg it's like Android phones cheaper and more powerful.

Got an Android phone I never use except when we go to the city. As soon as my 2 year contract runs out in Sept it's getting switched to a pay as you go phone. I'll put a $100 on it and that should last for a year with plenty of minutes left over. Got a deal from the phone company almost 20 years ago the gave to people with dial-up internet as they couldn't supply it over our old phone lines. $19.95/mth for 8000 min/mth long distance anywhere, anytime. Not giving up my land line anytime soon. ;)

I have cfl, led, hps and cmh. The led was a bestva 2000w just cheap dropped it did myself a favour replaced with hps 600w much better. I run Cfl/cmh veg cmh/hps for flower. I would try a led like a hlg 550 seen a few growers do well but not cheap. What I’ve got is what I can afford but I’m not in a rush to replace them. Most of the big growers I watch still run hid, does me well

Those big growers are starting to get squeezed between power bills and falling prices, so they're looking hard at LED. They're waiting for a breakthrough to make the ROI work better.

I can't spoil the beans just yet, but I've got the answer.

It’s already common knowledge/widely accepted that, although they save on power, LED’s cannot produce quality herb. Don’t waste your time and money people.

I think LEDs will become THE light in the future, and have come a long way, but their still not there yet :wink: HIDs are still the way to go and will be for a while yet imo.

Simple mathematics helps to understand that LED arrays are absolutely worth the mark-up. They are actually cheap, when you consider all of the factors which influence your operating costs. Even if you're small-scale, the ROI of a proper array is quick, and the qualitative benefits of making the switch are more attractive anyways, in my and many others' opinion.

ROI varies wildly based on local cost of energy, so you really can't make blanket statements like that.
