completely agree - though i don't think this has become some kind of "show off your smarts" thread.

that's your call - you can use whatever degree of correct grammar you want. I know i do. as for the length of the thread - i'm sorry but i'm enjoying this discussion.

it's not like you have to participate in it - there are lots and lots of threads i ignore.

I agree that on a casual forum the rules of grammar are, and should be, relaxed. But as you mention, this is a very diverse forum and folks whose native language isn't English would most likely find proper grammar much easier to comprehend. I know proper grammar makes writing easier to understand to a native English speaker. I completely agree that correcting grammar and spelling is boorish behavior and wouldn't condone or participate in it.

I will add my opinion about art, literature and writing. Most great artists are highly competent in their crafts. Jackson Pollack, who is most remembered as the painter who dribbled or dripped paint on the canvas was fully capable of painting in a realistic manner. He only begin truly expressing himself AFTER he learned the rules of painting.

And while there are some artists who never had to go through the painstaking task of learning how to do it "the right way" before branching off, (Van Gogh comes to mind) they are greatly outnumbered by the folks who weren't that fortunate.

So that stuffy and boring writing you find so off-putting makes the fun and creative writing possible. ya dig? There are very few worthwhile things that come easy.

It is akin to someone new to growing that says gardening is fun and creative (both true) so they have no need to learn about lighting, nutrients, phases of growth, etc.. They might get lucky but chances are they will fail miserably.

You may feel no one has the right to pass judgement on you but they do judge you just the same.

well put, exactly how i feel aswell. i know evryone judges people on some of the most rediculous things, my self included. it doesnt make it right though. i know plenty knowedgable and very successfull people that are atroshish spellers as my self. to be narrow minded and automaticly assume that advice from a spelling/grammar challenged indavidual is not good or false would be ignorant and foolish. its thier loss though.

i don't think anybody has been directly bashed. i think those who are adding to this thread in a positive manner are just agreeing that they prefer good grammar. why is that such a problem to so many of yous?

Personal consistency is more important than "correctness". It's nice to see the different styles expressed. Yall bitches know xactly whats I mean.

I am an English teacher and I find it very hard to read some of the posts. I see a lot of people using "no" in place of "know" and "there" in place of "their" and "they're" which really throws off the meaning of the sentence. I find myself spending too much time trying to figure out what people are actually trying to say.

At the end of the day people can present themselves here as they wish, and I am free to draw my own conclusions as I wish. I never expect perfection, but sometimes a little effort can go a long way.
