LED Xmas Lights..And You

First I want to start this by stating that; yes, I am aware that you all hate the idea of growing with anything less than HPS or MH, and no, I dont blame you-However, my inner 5 year old mad scientist is willing to take a hit to show what is possible when using super cheap, super ghetto grow set ups.

Let's begin...

1st. After having numerous successful grows using MH to Veg and a combination of CFL's Shop Fluro's and MH to flower, I decided that my expirimental side needed to be fed. I've read numerous threads on numerous forums of people scoffing at the idea: "LED XMAS LIGHTS? Wasting your time" and such...Perhaps I'm a time waster, or perhaps I'm tired of hearing how it wont work, especially when there's nobody who has tried it.

So with the decision made, I ran to the local big lot's (like walmart but cheaper) and picked up two sets of 90 red outdoor LED xmas lights for a total of $4.36. Then i cut up a cardboard box, used some tape and punched a few holes and got my fixture, after inserting all 180 bulbs into the punched holes i used a coat hanger to create a triangular shape to it and hung it from some string over my plants, plugged it in, and voila! red light everywhere.

Does it work? Well, I'm not some genius grower, I'm not a botanist, and I'm definitely not afraid to try things that seem unthinkable...that said, yes, It's working pretty well.

I had an experimental plant i had purposefully kept small that i placed under an entirely red LED light array for flowering with two small fluros on each side, it's been about 2 weeks with this set up and the plant is looking healthier than ever, no stretching, no heat issues, no discoloring, just dark green leaves and loads of white hairs.

Who know's what the yield will be, its 50/50 at this point it may be a good yield and it might suck, either way, don't believe the hype when people say "it cant be done", most times it just means they wouldn't try it themselves.

if anyone has any feedback or wants to share their opinion with me please feel free, and please do read my entire post before you tell me HPS is better...this is about LED's after all :blsmoke:

Happy Tokin!

Now for the fun part PICS!

indeed...but do be careful, electricity is no joke and xmas lights are no exception, they may run cooler than normal incandescents but they're still plenty strong to give you a good jolt. The lights i chose were designed for indoor/outdoor, so the electrical wires are better insulated against moisture and whatnot, I'd advise anyone thinking of trying this to choose the same types of lights, seeing that nobody likes to get shocked.

As far as the lights themselves, the only thing that you need to absolutely make sure you do is have them in the right spectrum ie. Blue LED's for Veg, Red LED's for flower-it's also fair to mention I've read various posts in forums and such that mention color temp-you won't find that info on a set of xmas lights, but like i said, I'm in 2 weeks and its looking fine.

I will keep this thread as updated as possible to show the progress under the LED's, and when i rig up my veg LED's I'll add the info for them as well.

If anything get that LED rig much closer to the plant. Lol kudos on the experimentation.

lol yea, had it raised up for the pic, I made it in an inverted "V" so it would be as close as possible without damaging or bending the main stalk, and thanks this is the second hair brained experiment I've had, this Plant is incredible and never ceases to amaze me. -First exp. was growing in 100% sand...which works fine but stunts it's growth lol.

i know that this thread was done a while ago, but i was wondering if it is possible to do the same experiment with a hydro set up?
