Labeling your plants

So I was wondering how you guys out here go about keeping track of your plants? I take a piece of Scotch tape, fold the ends over on themselves just slightly so there is a non sticky area that I can use to pull the tape apart, then sandwich the stem as I fold the tape in half, sticking it to itself. I write the info on the tape with a sharpie. I use a sharpie because the ink wont run if it gets wet. This method is okay but it's kind of a pain, not to mention a waste of tape.

Can you actually write directly on the leaves with a sharpie? I never tried this but I'm think about trying it? Would there be any toxic effects of doing this?

codes and numbers for mothers and cuttings and for new seed just there name and i keep them all in a note pad

i would think most inks would be harmful to the plant, how harmful i dont know but why risk it when a sticky note works jsut fine

i get the little sticker labels from walmart in the office supplies section. get like 200 for 2 or 3 bucks.
