We have a little pond. We had Koi and goldfish in there, but the Koi appear to be pretty stupid and all fell victim to a neighborhood cat or raccoon over the course of a summer. The goldfish all survived and got so big that we had to move them out to my father-in-laws much bigger pond where they still live. We now have a turtle and some smaller gold fish in there now.

Had a pond for almost 20 years. Koi are very distructive when it comes to lillies and plants, therefore don't have any as I once did. I've got gold fish that must be 15 years old. Every year at least one of the gold fish survive from being spawned in the pond, self perpetuating. The secrete to keeping gold fish that long is to either have a real big pond or a smaller pond with a waterfall or some other means to kept good water flow and airation going through the winter. If I figure out how to add picture I'll post.

Ya during the winter we run a heater and big ole air stone to keep a patch of ice open so the gas doesn't build up. Sorry to hear about the thieving predator Stowandgro. We put black netting over the pond during the summer. keeps the coons and cranes at bay. a few of our koi are getting about 10 years old now and our pond is getting VERY over crowded.

This is the secret reason for this thread honestly. i wanted to scout out some possible recipient of some of my FISHIES!! i wanna make sure they go to someone who has the winter under control and i wanna make sure whoever gets em has the room for them to run around. they've been in a decent sized pond up to this point id feel terrible putting it in something small.

Now I'm not sure which ones we are gonna give out (Old or young) we got a bunch of new ones this year that got pretty cool colors goin. so I'm not sure yet but We will figure it out soon enough
anyone interested can post here or send me a PM. il get some individual pics as soon as i get a chance.

a Cousin had some for years in a small man-made pond for irrigation of his garden. gravity fed, pretty cool. My idea of course ;)

any way he got money to finally dig a nice big one. moved all the koi and gold fish to it. and the koi where eaten by eagles in about a week. never lost a one before. moved 50 yards and sushi on the telephone pole.

We got a big metal crane and a fake blue heron too scare other birds away. (i hope anyway) I bet he had them up near the house or the pond was too small for them to dive into and the big one was big enough. That sucks bad Ive gotten pretty attached to these over the years I've had the old ones for 10 years, Id be pretty bummed if the birds got em.

^^^ put a few bird feeders in the opposite side of your house maybe give em an alternative food source; one that doesn't swim.

Great video HGK, I could watch those guys for hours. They look like they are having fun.
That is a very worth while project if you ask me. I think a koi pond just made it on to my
things to do list someday.

Thanks! i spend hours out there watching them and medicating! They are a blast. Its pretty easy to get going too, we started with a small little pond and had to bring them into the basement during the winter. They are very relaxing to hang out with. we just kept building new ponds lol
