Keeping a sterile res in dwc Shock Chlorine Advice

Since I already have bleach in the house, thats what I am going for if the Tea doesnt work.

Tried to weigh out 0,2 grams yesterday, and thats not alot of course. Quite puzzling when you search on the site, you read people using 6-8 drops for 1 gallon, dont know what that measures out to be, but quite the difference.

Think I will try the 0,2 grams to 8 gallons to begin with, just to be sure.
a scale accurate to 0.01 grams is a worthwhile investment. i got mine off ebay for 30 bucks.

I've noticed I get stem root or curl up ugly clones anytime I use tap water. I have to use clear rez everyday to keep stems healthy. Water temp is like 70 degrees. Stem rot at that temp? Clones don't even like to root in rockwool if I use tap water! Anyone ever heard of that happening with tap water?

Ive noticed people stated

0.1g per 10 gallon makes 1ppm

So if we dilute 0.1g per gallon (3.785l), it becomes 10ppm,

So then isnt it we need to add 378ml (0.1g/gal dilution) per gal to make 1ppm ? Divided by 10...

Not sure how much pool shock to use, but ive had great results with plain old clorox bleach, .25ml/gal for treatment .1ml/gal for prevention.20210412_224758.jpg

Lower it to .1ml/gal and switch from every adding bleach 3 days to just replenishing the res with the sterilized solution. You'll have no salt buildup and clean healthy roots.

I finally figured it out and it is working GREAT!

1.5 grams (ITS STRONG GUYS REALLY STRONG) of Pool Shock to 1 GAL of RO....
then 50 ml of the stock into the Reservoir

I saw particles floating in the reservoir the next day..I'm like WTF is that? OH that's the cleanup the Stock is doing it's job

THANKS BIG TIME....My Roots are White not Yellowish...A Slight tent of Nutrients color at the core but 3/4 of the roots are all white and the build-up prior to putting in the Pool shock stock is floating..well was floating...I changed out the Reservoir and it is Clean.

Bleach work well. Add 3 ppm to everything you add to the reservoir like top off and rez changes. Here's a dilution calculator probably already posted: Chlorine dilution calculator

The local brand I use is very pure and almost totally clear. Pool Shock still contains sodium, I would argue the amount of sodium is more or less the same if its a good quality bleach(sodium hypochlorite). I believe our local brand is 98% pure.

Lye(sodium hydroxide) is used in both of the manufacturing processes. If the pool shock is only 65% pure the other 35% contains mostly chlorides and carbonates, that include sodium chloride (table salt).

How big is your reservoir 50ml seems like allot.
I've over done it with bleach so be careful. I've had some strains not like 4ml per 5 gallons. I try to use 1.0 ml per 5 gallons now.
I want to start using this hth now the summers coming.

The issue with oxidation and chlorination agents (h202, bleach, shock) is not that it wont't work for sterilizing but that it hinders plant growth and can attack the roots as well and make it look like you got root rot which will than lead you to adding h2o2 or more shock and possibly kill the plant.

Phytotoxicity occurs in cannabis above 5ppm and to kill most pathogens would require 10ppm. So, at rates of 2-3ppm you are only killing certain kinds of bacteria and not others.

Lastly, if it is present in a nitrogen nutrient solution it can reduce the chlorine down to 0 but it is unknown if by that time enough time passed to kill the pathogens.

Who's sock are you? Have you actually used an oxidizer or are you just speaking out your ass? There's many people on here who use oxidizer with only added benefits in hydro. H2O2 is not a chlorine agent.

5ppm is safe for humans and Cannabis. My plants actually react positively when adding chlorine, they perk up. Chlorine is also a tertiary nutrient in plants.

Right H2O2 is not a chlorine but an oxidizer as I mentioned. The issue again is also not that it wont work but that it will only work on certain pathogens up to 5ppm and anything beyond can cause damage to the plant, roots, etc.

You have to be very careful when working with these and know exactly what levels you are working with. A lot of growers will not have it this dialed in and measured out to be aware if at 5ppm or below or not.

In addition for any pathogen above 5ppm required for disinfecting you are not and never will be protected.

You still only talk in theoretical terms. I asked you if you had some own experience, knowledge through practice or anecdotal evidence to support your claims?

Nope that's either Sodium hypochlorite or Calcium hypochlorite. It reads clearly on the label that's it's for increasing chlorine levels. H202 is H202. That's probably regular Pool Shock(Calcium hypochlorite).

H2O2 is tricky and harder to work with than chlorine but people do have success with it. Chlorine(hypochlorites) is easier to dose, has longer residual effect and is way harder to overdo than H202.

I didn't know that... I have always just used silver bullet which is h2o2 basically

2, You do not intend using a high strength solution (you'd need PPE) to clean it prior to use, but to attempt to maintain a system full of plant roots, sterile?
OK. Assuming I've got the facts right... this is a daft idea.
1. Tap water has about the highest concentration of chlorine or chloramine that the roots can stand. Using a stronger solution will stunt, then kill your plants.
2. Tap water is not resistant to the growth of algae and bio-film-forming organisms of all sorts.
3. Sterility can only be achieved in an autoclave or a recondensing solvent bath. I don't think your plants would like those.
4. Even 100% alcohol leaves viable spores behind. 70% alcohol + H2O2 will sterilise but I don't think your plants would like that.
In other words, what you think is sterile is anything but sterile.

Bleach won't sterilize everything and nobody ever wrote that either. But it's very good at killing and combating certain pathogens like pythium and other parasitic oomycetes.
