Keeping a cutting going till next season?

I've been growing totally natural this year on my second grow. One of my plants is very healthy, and I want to keep the strain going for next year.

I want to get a cutting from her in the next couple of weeks, but I'm not sure how it will cope through the winter months with the shorter days.

Can I keep it going in the house till next season growing at a slower pace? What about the lighting? Will standard house bulbs keep the plant in veg state?

Thanks in advance :)

Just get a couple of 6500k small cfls acouple of 11 watters and keep pruning it or it will get out of hand! Standard bulbs will cause uncontrollable strectching.

Excellent, so quick with the reply too!

Ok, so lighting questions answered...... I'm new to pruning, I pruned my plant last season on my first grow quite often & I got it really bushy until some scum stole it from my garden. But I never had to prune it in the height, only the width..... so what's the deal with pruning it to stop it getting too high? I mean, I can't just lop the top of the plant off can I?

p.s What is stretching?

Cheers :D :joint:

Stretching is where the plant grows very rapidly upwards, very thin stem and weak branches, in a normal situation it happens when the light is too high above the canopy......and yes you can 'top' the plant, it takes a week to recover and start new growth but creates two main stems so when you look at it and imagine it stripped bare you could make a catapult out of it as it will be Y shaped, then repeat.

Ah right, I think I understand. So if I lop the top off, it will grow two stems from the one?

How many times can I do that without shocking the plant? What sort of recovery period will it need before it gets too big again and I have to top it.

Also, sorry for all the Q's, but what is the minimum amount of light I can give the plant to keep it in veg?

A couple of 11 watt cool white (6500k) cfl's. You can top indefinately but eventually the new stems will become thinner and thinner, but you can do it half a dozen times leaving a month between each one. +rep? lol

Just for one single plant, you are looking at a lot of time, money, space & security. I fully understand about wanting to save a nice looking plant. I do have one plant in the veg state that has been harvested twice, then put into rejuvenate state-veg state. She is probably a little over a year old. One good light can handle several plants... take several clones, and do a regular indoor grow, while rejuving the Mother. One 400 watt light that can go from MH to HPS would be ideal. Then there's the heating, venting, etc. Over time, one plant can get you 100's of plants. You could also pollinate 1 or 2 branches and germ them around Dec. or Jan, to get a good start for next Spring. So many choices. Do your long range total cost & room available first, to see what is feasible, then grow from there. Good Luck.

Cool.... Rep+ for you :D (still getting the hang of the site!)

Come next season I'll be butchering the plant for clones anyway, so it won't need to be super strong. unless of course the weakness is passed on to the clones?

I'm only looking to keep the plant going till my outdoor grow next year, I want to keep it in veg, but still a manageable size (around 2-3 foot). I'm not really in a position to be growing in doors as the only space I have is the loft, and we are plagued by police helicopters in this area looking for heat signatures.

You mentioned polinating just 1 or 2 branches. What would the benefits of this be? Would this give me seeds on just those two & not the rest of the plant? Also, how does this help the plant get a better start for next year?
