Kaya Gold

OK, this is my first real attempt.

I got 5 kaya gold feminized from Nirvana. I picked the strain because they said that it was easy to grow, and could take harsh conditions. I'm in the SE US and it get's hot here.

I started the seeds in 16oz stadium cups on April 6. I did not soak the seeds, or use the paper towel germination method. I just put some potting soil in the cup, left it down about 1-1/2" from the top, put the seed on top of the soil, and pushed it below the surface with my index finger, then raked soil back across the seed. I got the soil nice and moist with a spray bottle, then covered with clear plastic wrap to create a green house effect. I left in the dark for the first 36 hours, and the seeds popped through the soil on April 9th, 3 days later.

I grew them in the stadium cups for two weeks. The plants were about 6" tall when I transplanted to 5 gallon buckets on April 23rd. So, at this point the plants are a little over 6 weeks old.

Despite the prevailing wisdom of this site, I used Miracle Grow Moisture Control potting soil. It already has fertilizer included, it says it feeds for up to 3 months, so at this point I have not given any additional nutrients.

It's been unusually cloudy here. The day I transplanted was cloudy, and the sun did not shine for almost 3 days. Since then we have had a couple of weeks were 3 or 4 days in a row there was no sunshine. In fact, it's been cloudy and raining the last few days and we don't expect much sunshine tomorrow.

I'd like to know what you think. I think they are a bit stretchy, but I think the cloudy weather has contributed to this. When the sun shines, they get about 6 hours of direct sunlight.

Oh, the date stamp on the photos is not correct. The pictures are from today.

looking good :D they are a little stretched but i've seen much worse lol. plants need 14-18 hours of direct sunlight to grow without stretching, but they look healthy. just remember they can double or even triple in size when they start flowering. keep it up!

Yeah, the cloudy weather isn't helping at all. It is so not typical of my area. I'm sure it will get sunny. There's no way I could get that much sunlight here, even in the middle of a field. I hear you about the size, it's a sativa dominant strain and they say it grows tall. I considered topping, but decided to just go natural. Won't growing in 5 gallon buckets keep the size down some?

I couldn't find too may people growing this strain on here. Husalife had a grow journal last year, he said they did well. He had a mold problem, but it was rainy when they were flowering. Like I said, I decided to go with the strain because they are supposed to be hardy, takes harsh conditions. You started growing yet? Put some pics on this thread.

I'm guessing they are a little under 3ft at this point. How tall they will get, I have not clue. Nirvana says they grow tall. I guess if they are close to 3ft at 6 weeks old, who knows. The 5 gallon buckets should limit their height I would think

They look awesome man, really healthy. They don't look that stretchy to me considering they are sativa dominant. Maybe a little bit, but the stems seems nice and thick. Mine are getting a little streched and I think the weather might have something to do with it too. Considering how much is left in the grow season, they might reach 6 feet tall. So they are about 6 weeks old? How long did you grow them inside and under what kind of light?

I'm about 2-3 states north of you (depending on which Carolina you are from) and have been dealing with the same shitty weather. As a matter of fact, about 2 or 3 weeks ago we had a light frost 2 nights in a row. My first batch is about 6 weeks old too and were about 3 weeks old when that happened, but they were fine. Had me a little worried for a little though. The weather sucks up here too. It's warmed up, but I swear we haven't had a sunny day here in like 2 weeks. It's been awhile since we talked, I know we were talking about strains and stuff, I ended up getting some Northern Lights from Nirvana. They were suppose to be for an indoor grow, but that fell through on me and had to take them outside. They are about 3 weeks old and look awesome so far, but those Kaya Gold look good, think ya got me beat. Check out my journal in my sig if you get a chance.

Keep us updated. If I do another outdoor next year, I'd like to do a sativa, like to see how they turn out.

Thanks Sonar.
I saw the weather report tonight, and they say we can switch our umbrellas for sunglasses. I started them in a 16 oz stadium cup, but they outgrew that in two weeks. I had a filing cabinet set up with (5) 26 watt cfls. After a couple days, I started putting them outside for a little sunlight, we had some awesome weather when I started them, it just turned shitty after I transplanted into the buckets and kept them outside all the time. I would have them under the lights at night, then in the sun from about 9am to 3 pm, then dark cycle from 3pm until 9pm. Like I said, they went outside full time from when they were about 2 weeks old, and 6" tall or so.

I would be in NC, so you must be about MD?

I'm gonna check out your journal.

Thanks Rhino,
I don't think you are too late at all. I hope your's grow as fast as mine. Good luck and I'll keep my eyes open for your posts.
Maybe we should just start a Kaya Gold thread. Oh, I guess I already did. Feel free to post some pictures on this thread.

You're good man you got time., especially if you're in MD. I wouldn't wait too much longer though. What's the season like there? You prob don't get frost til november I bet. Better late than never. Look at the size of CGB's plants and it's not even June!

PA actually. Forgot about MD, haha.

Germed two seeds sunday - they broke through the top of pro-mix yesterday afternoon. About one inch today. Looks good so far. I will start the other 3 seeds maybe tomorrow. I am really happy with both seeds popping. First time - very happy with the two girls. I will post pictures of them in a couple of days once they get a little bigger.

How long should I wait to put them outside? How big should I let them get in the hot house?

Rhino,
I started mine in 16 oz cups and moved them to the buckets and outside when they were about 2 weeks old. By then they were 6"tall and the leaf canopy was as wide as the cup. When I took them out of the cups, they were pretty much rootbound in the cup. I had not watered for a couple of days, so the soil was fairly dry, they came out easy and the root ball stayed in tack. They never even wilted when I transplanted.

You get your seeds from Nirvana? I got 5 and all 5 were good to go. I've got pre-flowers and they all look female. In fact, I'm sure 3 are, pretty sure on the fourth, and I'm afraid the 5th is going to be hermie.

Your girls look great and healthy! I hope my girls get as sexy!

I transplanted my two in 1.6 gallon pots - pro-mix soil - two days ago. They have been outside the last four days by the pool with about 10 hours of direct sunlight each day. From 9 am to about 7:45 pm. It was been about 85 - 92 degrees during the day and about 70 - 72 at night. The past four days we have had great sunny days. They are two inch's or more.

Couple of questions:
How do they look?
Do you think they are getting too much direct sunlight?
When should I do the first nutes? (they will be organic - Neptunes Harvest- Fish and seaweed)
How big should I let them get before transplanting into 5 or 6 gallon pots?

I took these pictures to share with you guys yesterday afternoon. They are 9 days old in the pictures:
