I actually got rep for a simple set-up...which got me to thinking...how many people over-think this "hobby"?
So here is a thread for n00bs or overly anal types who are greeted with failure too often. Add advice as you see fit but remember the title of the thread. K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid)
First golden rule: Your first grow ever should be bagseed. Yes, just a seed you got in your bag of ok pot. Use the plumpest, least weak looking one. No white seeds. The reason for this is simple...you WILL screw up and it shouldn't cost you an arm n a leg when you do. Furthermore if you don't screw up too bad...chances are you'll have pot in the end that is better than the regs that you bought! Score! It'll also give you a chance to read up on seedbanks and strains...n whatnot here so when you do buy your first seeds...you'll feel confident.
Second golden rule: Your first seed purchase should be a strain with a short flower time. 7-8 weeks is nice. The shorter the flower time...the less time you have to manage to keep the sucker alive. Furthermore your reward (the crop) will come that much sooner. Also look for strains that say they are easy to grow. There are thousands of strains. You will NEVER grow them all. So why not start with a nice, simple strain that is n00b friendly? I'm finishing my 6th crop...I still lean towards n00b strains as there are soooooooo many fantastic ones to be tried. Also don't buy $150 seeds as your first "real" grow. Nirvana has $35 packs of seeds that produce great plants. I'd recommend that you set a hard cap of $50. There are MANY great n00b strains to be had for that or less. Avoid the 12 to 14 week exotic hazes please. You'll rip your hair out waiting for those to finish. And chances are they require more space than you have anyways.
Third Golden rule:Read constantly. google search your strain to death. read the FAQs here. Read them again. All your questions have been answered somewhere before. This thread is not meant to be all inclusive...rather it's for pointing you in the right direction and hopefully saving you a bit of money and worry.
In the spirit of K.I.S.S. I'd suggest cfls and fluorescents to start with. (cheap, easy to get...no worries about the authorities are out to get you kinda paranoia) When you "get" those and how the color spectrums work for the phases of the plant...move up to a mh/hps combo if you wish.
