What the f#*k is that. Lol
So your an Aussie then.
Love that country.
How do you get seeds into Australia, I've seen how hard it is to get anything in there.

i've used cobs, quantum boards, and h.i.d., and theres a place for all of them.
cobs and quantum boards are great for a small scale grow, and even a large one, if the conditions are right, but even with the falling prices, h.i.d. is still way cheaper to get set up and running with, even if you have to buy a fan and some ducting to keep them cool.
if you live in a cold climate, at least half the year, you'll have to run supplemental heating with cobs or quantum boards, so theres a lot of your savings out the window.
as far as h.i.d. being more detectable to flir cameras...only if you don't set things up right. don't put your grow room right by a window, put your exhaust in a place where its camoflagued, inside the carcasss of an air conditioner, run it up the roof to your chimney or the exhaust for your furnace, or just hook it to the dryer vent, all easily explainable sources of heat.
more people have been busted with h.i.d. because more people use h.i.d., its been around way longer.
and heres the bottom line for me, i get bigger buds using a h.i.d......not saying better, not saying you can't get good yields from cobs or quantum boards...but i get bigger yields from using high pressure sodium than i did when i flowered under cobs or quantum boards either one. the quantum board weed was awesome, rock hard nugs that were just covered in trichs, but the same pheno grown under the hps produced 25% more. same conditions otherwise, plants were within feet of each other, fed the same feed. the quantum boards plants were ready a week earlier than the hps plants, but in that week, they produced 25% more final weight than the QBs did.
so what i'm saying is there's a place for both, and no reason to hate on either.
pick the one that seems to fit your needs. i know the op is growing in a closet, so in this case i'd actually recommend quantum boards, they use less power and produce less heat, and they also take up less overhead space.
that way you can avoid the extractor fan and ducting, although to be honest with you, unless you live alone with no neighbors close, smell WILL be an issue, so you might want to look into getting a 4 inch fan and a good carbon filter anyway, not for cooling but for odor control

I live in uk pal and it's not hard to maintain a certain temp with leds.
LEDs run at a more optimal temperature than hids.
I grow during winter months with no problems.
My LEDs highest temp is 30c.
The lowest temp I've had in the grow space is 20.4c. Plants don't need heat to grow. Moisture, humidity and light are all it needs.
Plants grow more/ better in cooler conditions eg nite time or lights out.there is more growth during this period.
Cannabis is a lot like coffee plants with simular humidity levels through the day and cool nites.
And if you think about it it makes sense, coffee grows in mountain ranges just like cannabis.

600w of cobs/QB will distroy a 600hps better light spread higher umol/ppfd
no, you can grow flowers under t5s, but the few members here who do so use some pretty expensive bulbs, color corrected, at least one UV bulb in the mix....GOOD t5s aren't cheap.
heres my experience.
i started off with t5s and cheap led flood lights from ebay. i grew some weed, and it wasn't bad, but yields were shitty. i got bigger led flood lights, 300 watt ones, and it got better, but it still wasn't what i would call good yields. then i got a 400 watt hps, and everything got better, quality went up by a good bit, yield went up by more than a good bit, it almost tripled. now i flower 4 plants at a time in 10 gallon totes, in a 4x4 tent, under a 600 watt hps. best quality and yield i've gotten yet.
cobs and quantum boards give good results as well, usually a slightly lower yield, but as good or better quality, and they finish a week to ten days earlier than the same pheno under hps.
so, yeah, you can do what you're doing, but your plants will never live up to their potential with the equipment you have.
do this grow with what you have. see how it comes out. let us know. i'm sure a lot of people here will give you good advice when you decide to upgrade
