Turns out you can get a kidney stone at 21, I was riding in a friends car doing nothing at all earlier when I started having really bad abdominal pain. So I figured ah shit I got food poisoning and I'm gonna end up in the bathroom over this, after a couple hours of trying to get over it and not having any symptoms other than pain that got considerably worse I decided I needed to get help. By the time I got the hospital I was in such bad pain I couldn't even lay in the bed they wanted me in and opted to pace in my room which was still painful as all hell. At first I refused painkillers like I normally would and they told me if I couldn't lay down and be still they couldn't perform the tests they needed so I allowed them to hit me with what I later found out was morphine, holy shit I went from thinking my appendix was bursting inside me to taking a nap in about a minute. I spent the next 4 hours having blood and piss work done and getting a catscan while sleeping in between to be released at 330 in the morning with prescriptions for vics percs and something called tramydol.

Wasn't exactly how I planned on spending my day especially cause I had a first date set up but she knows what happened and tomorrows a new day

Damn dude!

I'm really interested in this, you get kidney stones from excess calcium build up, right? What does your diet consist of? Where was the pain and what did it feel like, 1-10? Did you pass the stone(s)?

That's something I'm actually pretty worried about, but it seems like it might be partially genetic somehow, I'm not sure how exactly, but my parents have been going 40 & 50 years + respectively drinking nothing but (I would guess) 40% soft drinks and 60% water, no kidney stones.. Earlier in my teens, I did too, as I've grown up and learned about nutrition and all that shit it's been 80% water, 20% shit.

I think they blamed it on caffeine use, I actually managed to poison myself with coffee one time so its not a surprise

Wat?

I didn't even know that was possible..

How much caffeine do you ingest?

I didn't either till it happened to me, was starting an office job after 2+ years of going to sleep at 5 am (right now lol) and the training was sooo boring. I was drinking 8-10 mugs of double strong coffee a day for the whole first month. Ended up having decreased cognitive function, heart palpatations, uncontrollable muscle spasms and a bunch of other stuff. Dumbass me googled my symptoms and thought I had ms (cause of the shakes) but after going to the dr and having blood drawn he came back into the room and told me I was at risk for cardiac arrest and not a drop more for at least a month

Holy fuck, man! Moderation!

More sleep, less coffee!

I drink, maybe a soft drink a day for 15 years, I thought that was high as fuck! Coffee maybe once a month, if that.

If you haven't passed it(them) yet, how do you currently feel? How did they diagnose it as kidney stones?

Different types/composition of kidney stones but consensus is major causes are dehydration, excessive oxalates (coffee/dk tea), being overweight and excess dietary phosphorus (colas). Low calcium diets may actually increase incidence of stones. Major lifestyle change for me was cutting out cola drinks, less dark teas, increase water consumption after a 20 something friend of mine got them. I don't worry about the calcium or caffeine. I think the water consumption is the biggest single factor. People can be in a state of mild dehydration and not realize it.

Thank god they treated you and didn't decide you were simply 'opiate seeking'. I had my first kidney stone when I was 19. I presented to the ER with frank blood in my urine they accused me of tampering with the specimen and opiate seeking. I almost died over the next 72 hours. I knew what I had and begged them for help. I actually grabbed the arm of the RN giving me my final instructions and begged for a KUB instead of releasing me.

I had to make it through with zero opiates and pushing fluids. I finally passed the stone but I did permanent damage to my right kidney, sigh..... I actually TOOK the stone back to the Urologist that finally saw me and released me. Instead of sending it in for analysis they 'lost it'. I was 19 and naive and didn't realize I should have sued their asses off. We didn't do that back in the day.

Thank god they treated you.
