Hey dudes,
Just received my new 400W MH/HPS system from HTG. Both bulbs are the AgraMax type. Got it hooked up running the MH. Got a couple questions -

1) How far from the plants? Currently it's about 40" from the plants. Readings at plant level: 82*F, 42% humidity. This is with absolutely no fan going yet.

2) Should I keep it further away in the beginning? I got three plants going, two which are about 2 inches tall (growing their 2nd set) and one that hasn't even popped out of the soil yet.

3) Will I see serious stretching if I keep the light too far away (40"?)

Anything else I need to know right now?

So I lowered it to about 30". Temps are around 83-84 without a fan. I will try to look for one tonight, Wal-Mart nor Home Depot has regular fans anymore, wtf....

The more you can cool it the better, the closer you get it the better.

Try and order a Air cooling reflector from HTC. Or make one your self if your a handy man.
Stealth hydro has a Liquid cooled setup. It seems wicked, all you need is your ballast and bulb, and a water pump. I've yet to try it but i think this is the future of cooling your lights.

If it works how i think it will you could put your 400 watter 15-20" away.. who know maybe even closer.

Keep playing with your level's tho and buy a nice fan ;)

Thanks for the tips man. Thing is, I was going to purchase the Cool Tube but honestly; until I see how awesome MH/HPS really can be, I stuck with the standard Max Wing 4-sided reflector.

I just bought a oscillating fan that's blowing across right underneath the MH bulb. Temps have gone up to 85*F when I came home so hopefully I can get the temps udner 80.

Well if you have some spare cash the reflector itself ranges from $79 up then you need a inline fan to blow air into the unit.
Or get some powerful fans directed at the bulb. Trial and error keep on figuring it out :P
