When people say to start small, it's not because they don't want another grower in the area or don't want your producing good products, it's because this shit takes planning you have not done.

I bought a 400 hps/mh set up from HTG. No cool tube. I also bought what else I needed, so I thought.

After one successful plant (tomato) I thought I was golden. Wrong. Lettuce in one tub, peppers in the other. Apparently these plants are not NEAR as hardy as tomato plants, as they have all but dried up and killed off. Sometimes it is easier and cheaper in the long run to start small (cfl setup) than to "go big or go home!" I spent something 350 up front on stuff and while I now have equipment for a small room when money comes for ventilation...i'm not using half of that money.

Try growing with cheap lighting first to see if you can keep it cool enough, I was finally able to measure my water temps with a digi thermometer and they were breaking 84 degrees! I switched to CFL and while they are still at 77, I can cool this far easier than 84+ degree water. People (including myself) seem to downplay to importance of environment it seems.

yes it depends on how much start up money you have. HPS will always give off a lot of heat so you have to have fans up the ass to cool that room off. CFL's are good for starters because they cheap, not a lot of heat, and they can get the job done. Plus a household fan will do for cfls. Also you upgrade your gear as you harvest your hard work. I dont think many of us growers can buy $900 worth of gear. Lol i so far have invested like $300 dollars and i dont have anywhere near the gear i want.

It is nice to rock a tomato for a bit to really get her dialed in, plus cuttings are free, before you move on. thanks for sharing some good advice
