just tiny flyers they live in soil
you should try neem seed meal as a top dress i heard it works for soil dwellers.
id recommend diatomaceous earth but from what ive read its a little on the extreme side for all the negative effects it causses physically to a person

Depends on what those little fliers are. Fungus gnat adults? I just cover the surface with DE to get rid of those little buggers. Water from the bottom to keep the top dry and not disturb the DE as well. Don't use DE made for water filters as it's no good to kill bugs. You want animal feed grade or cleaner stuff made for human consumption. About 15 years ago I bought a 30lb bag at the feed store for about $30 and still have 5lbs or so left. We use it on ant hills in the garden or around the house. Wife adds some to the chicken feed too.

Not good to breathe the dust so if handling it a lot wear a dust mask otherwise it's harmless. Can even eat it to get rid of internal parasites.
