Strip all the leaf off from the base/trunk to about 60% of its height leave the top 40%

This is NOT true and has been proven many times over. Removing leaves has many, many benefits over not doing it. But yeah, More then one way to skin a cat I suppose.

I'm on the non defoliation side. A few big fans sure but there the plants solar panels. They absorb the most energy that feed the entire plant. Ahhh the same old debate over and over again.

To the op if a swallon calyxes have hairs coming out of them there is no seed. If the hairs turn Brown pre maturely you may have problems.
