Is this a bad idea? (PIC)

Look closely at the screen shot. I have it set to automatically answer when I call.

What if someone else calls? Will it answer and let the world see your garden? Or do you have punch a pin number in to see the feed? If you answer with 2 yes's then a no. I would say bad idea.

is that on a webcam? how far is it away from you?

It requires a password and it is aprox. 1 hr. away.

I'm not sure but I think IP addressing could get a bit dangerous. lol. Keep your PC clean. Temp files can get ya and they're not always where you think they are.

download a ip safe software like peerguardian just to be safe

if it requires a password, thats a great idea... but an even better one I think would be to have a web-enabled power switch If things go bad, you could turn off different things from its interface

The fact that people post their giant grow ops on here is still a bit ridiculous to me, so I don't know how anyone who has a grow journal on here can really say that's stupid. I don't know what you need to look at, though. If someone broke in there and took them, your fucked anyway because your an hour away. If you start to see a fire or something, your still an hour away! and your computer is going to burn down as well

& your plants are gonna get big and there won be enough room anyways... it will be to bushy.

I have a lot of room to move the camera back and get a better view. I was up close on one particular plant that day because it was wilting a bit due to accidental overwatering.

I still dont see any good comming out of this considering how far away you are ..

not exactly on topic, but if you're looking for automation. Check out neptune systems or reefkeeper aquarium controllers. The could basically run your whole setup, from dosing nutrients based on readings from scientific grade probes, to controlling vent fans, timers, humidity sensors, co2, flood sensors. The ability to time outlets is amazing, they have their own programming language which is rather easy to learn, allowing you to basically program the units to do whatever you want. Some of the more interesting out of the box features are the ability to mimic sun and moon cycles exactly, hehe.

I say if you don't have any hesitant feelings then go for it.
