Is it really worth upgrading from 400 watt HPS to 600 watt HPS?

Yeah.
Seriously, yeah. Whats the difference in the electrical bill where you live, like $1.50/week? From what I gather, the 600w HPS is the one to get anyway. Somehow they managed to make it MORE efficient than the 1000w HPS and I've heard the 600w has a slightly better spectrum. On the other hand, I picked up a 250w HPS and switched the bulb out for a 250w ceramic metal halide last night. Looks a lot like a MH with a slight pink tint. The plants seem to love it already! I hear they make 400w CMH bulbs as well so might be something to look into, though it'd be more for vegetating, not so much flowering.

Well I got 11.5oz off my 400HPS lsat grow. I got given a 600 hps for this grow. It's a lot brighter, but not sure if I really need it. depends on how much bud you want to grow.

You don't need it, don't get carried away thinking you just need this one thing to grow good smoke, it will drive you mad, and cost you loads.

If you want to increse you gardens efficency, then yes get the light. What I say to my self these days is, "I'm only upgrading when I reach 100% effiency with what I have."

i would esp if u go digital, they are suppose to get damn near a 1000w, i sported a 400 wat digi and didnt even notice a raise in power cost (granted i changed my house lights and shit and tried to save some)

I now have dual 600s and the power went up 20 bucks a month many things have changed i wont get into but with air cooling you can get sick results.

now that i think about it if u have a 400w magnetic pickup a 400w digi if u dont wanna increase your plant count, but you could also add a few if you did this, check it out and research it a bit digi ballists rock if you havnt checked them out yet...

I wonder how much hotter my room would get, what would be the difference heat wise between a 400 watt and 600 watt, also I have 400 with ballast in grow room, would there be a difference with 600 and going digital, is digital cooler?
Sorry if I am hijacking but I think this goes well with the question

Title says it all, what's your opinion?
Well, my opinion is to use what you need. A 400w will light an area of 3x3 OK for some good buds, while a 600w will light that same area really well for some great buds. You will have to deal with the increased heat.

Thanx for all the interaction i was using a 3X3 tray under a 400 watt HPS, I did buy a 600 watt HPS yesterday and it seems quite a bit brighter. I also bought a 4X4 tray, a reservoir with cover, and another daisy cloner, getting ready for the next grow. Now can you tell me how many plants i can (without over crowding) put into a 4X4 tray?
And more importantly using a yield master 2 reflector what would be the minimum distance between the bottom of the light and the top of the 4X4 tray to get coverage on the whole tray?

Hi, That Guy 1984.

Sorry to dissagree with you.

But If you are buying lights get the 600W HPS, It puts out nearly as much light as 2x 400W HPS lights, uses less power and only cost about $30 more than a single 400W.
And while it does put out more heat than a 400W HPS, it will run a lot cooler than two 400W HPS lights.

If you use the money saved to buy an air cooled hood. You will be in for some good growing.

IMHO.

:)

But like I said. dpending on why you are groing, I would aim to get at least 12oz off the 400 before I would upgrade.
