is it ok to trim or cut off fan leaves????

my uncle and i are growing indoors and he isnt sure if its good to cut off or just trim the big fan leaves on the plant.i told him that it is because of the big fan leaves getting the moisture and the buds not getting as much in turn not growing bigger then desired.its only 2 months into the grow but they are coming nicely,so should we cut or trim the big fan leaves or leave them be?

Good Question.

Try tucking the leaf leafs inside of the steams if there semi blocking any bud sites. The older the plants become the more likely your find Fan leafs will begin to block out light exposure to the lower bud sites.

Theres a big mixture of opinions about trimming or not to trim anything when growing. And it sure does open up some debates on here.

these comes to mind

Everyone has an opinion about this, and here's mine for an indoor grow -- don't cut or trim any fan leaves on the top two thirds of the plant. They're needed for growth and finishing the flowering stage. The bottom third is up to you. Usually that's not a place that gets a lot of light because once the canopy fills in, the light (depending on the wattage) might not penetrate that far down. So you can remove the bottom third of the leaves and allow more energy to go elsewhere in the plant.

Personally, I vape my trim, so it doesn't bother me to have fluffy little bits on the lower third. However, on my next grow I'm going to pull the bottom third on half my plants as an experiment to see if it makes for bigger bud or not.

Fan leaves are not an impediment to bud development and certainly not by your reasoning. Water moves naturally up and thru plants, even to the top of the very tallest of trees. Plants are constantly transpiring, or loosing water thru the pores (stomata) on the leaves, and plants are able to open/close these pores to regulate the flow of water throughout the plant. As water is lost thru the leaves it is actually driven up the plant.

Take a look at this: http://biology.kenyon.edu/HHMI/Biol113/movemet of water in plants.htm

Yep, agree with Krypto and Elk on this. Unless you're into defoliation, leave the upper fan leaves alone. Tuck 'em, or trim 'em, if necessary during flowering. But let them help the plant grow big and strong during veg.

Good luck
