Is a degree worth it for growing?

Iv been growing for a few years and iv decided i want a career growing cannabis. I’m in NY so it’s not fully legal yet but i want to be prepared. I’m graduating this year and i’m considering going to college for A.A.S degree in “Horticulture: Cannabis Biology and Cultivation Track.” Will this help me get a better job or is growing experience enough?

No job can teach you experience man. BUT knowledge is power so you should do both.

you probably already know this but you only get better at growing when you make a mad crazy mistake yourself and your plant takes that fall and then you have to dig deep to figure out how to bring her back to life. when things go wrong is when you get that REAL experience

If you enjoy growing then do a Horticultural degree. I wouldn't do a Cannabis only one.

Graduating high school at 32? lol. 12 grade is a bitch. Just messing with ya but you’ll need to be more attentive to details I think

Nothing wrong with horticulture but you might be disappointed in the job opportunities and pay in the cannabis industry. You also need to make sure that any credits are transferable in case you want to continue and get a 4 year degree.

If you want to have a career in horticulture there a better paths to take than cannabis growing. It all depends on if you want to make a decent stable living. There are many other more secure and financially rewarding opportunities out there. You'll be standing in line for the next cannabis job with all the others that had a few good harvests and now want to be a cannabis grower. It's a race to the bottom as far as pay is concerned unless you bring more to the table beyond just being able to grow weed. A 2 year degree from a Community College isn't going to mean anything.

If cultivating top shelf is what your after then your best going to some harvest festivals in the fall with the hopes to seek out a mentor. Many of us in upstate ny have spent decades underground cultivating top shelf organics. Speaking only for myself when I say I’ll be damned if any of our genetics would ever be found on a overtaxed shelf of a dispensary. I suspect ny’s latest craze of cannabis focused “horticulture school” will be a racket beyond epic proportions. The “schools” will surely receive kickbacks from large corporations to push their overpriced growing products. A few harvest festivals under your belt and you will find it’s a whole community that shares knowledge for free. Best of luck

I think you want both experience & some education if you want to make a professional go of this. I work in NYS HED at an institution that offers multiple tracks in this field nowadays (certificate programs rather than Associates or Bachelors) and know a few people who have gone through the cultivation cert and indeed were happy with what they learned and their outcomes.

depends on whats expensive for you do you have time and money for it. you could find out about something new or cool soo its good. but as a job maybe it could help if you wanted money from a bank. a simple portofolio with a few grows would be enoguht to get a job in my opinion.learning to drive a tractor would be good for you to get a job XD hahahaha
